  1. I bought this because I needed a new dvd player in a pinch, and have been pleasantly surprised. Even without using the HDMI cable, it converts PAL. However, it is region locked, so the majority of my disc still cannot play. Not being a major company or player, there isn't much in the way of region hacking available. Does anyone know of any?

Actually the big name players are harder to hack than the no-names.....but region hackable players are becoming VERY scarce these days. It's not like it used to be.

Many Philips and Pioneer players can still be hacked (despite Philips' official denials) and if you live in Australia you may be even lucky enough to have Sony and Samsung players that can be unlocked (in most the world it is essentially impossible to unlock those without paying for a hardware modification) but as hech54 says it's getting harder and harder to find unlockable players. If you can't find any unlock information then it probably doesn't exist for your player.

Converting PAL outside of HDMI is not particularly rare. I have a Philips DVD player that cost me $40 US 2 months ago and it does that. I have it connected via component video and it converts PAL fine.
