  1. i donno if its the right section...please move the topic if its not
so guys i have a 5 yr old sony mhc-gnz8d home theatre player

    Link for Specification :
    http://www.gandhiappliances.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2092

i havent touched this system since 2 yrs and now all of a sudden i hv gained interest in it but when i do the connections and try to power it on..the display shows loading..and suddenly the whole system goes off and the I/O light on the power button keeps flashing..nothing works..all i have to do is unplug the power cord and plug it back in

the manual says that this thing happens only either if there is blockage air or the speakers are short-circuited.

i m pretty sure that the speakers are not short...hv checked the wires and hv connected them properly...

although there is lot of dust on the system...but the rear fan works fine and the holes arent blocked either.

P.S should i be connecting all the five speakers together fr the HT to work..i m not connecting the surround speakers now as d connecting wires are missing..i m pretty sure as long as the front speakers are connected there shouldnt be a prob right ?

i donn wanna spend money on repairing it so i js thaught some of u guys might know what the problem is and can help me out .

my main aim is to connect the HT to my comp so that i can get 5.1 surround sound.

is there any way in which i can just connect the 5 speakers to the back of my mobo...my mobo supports 5.1 sound..so is it possible that i can just leave the main component aside and just connect the speakers directly to the back of my comp...i knw u hv to need some device to power the speakers and some convertors because the back of my mobo takes only 3.5mm type of connection wheres my speakers hv simple (+)(-) connecting wires..thats it

I m attaching pics of d back of my HT as well as my mobo...

    mobo

    HT

All repies will be appreciated...thank you

  3. The audio output level of your motherboard is too low to drive speakers directly. You need to have an amp.

Do not connect the speaker outputs of the HT system to the line or mic inputs of the computer. That's asking for trouble.

I've never seen an amp that wouldn't at least switch on when no speakers are attached. It sounds like your HT system is dead.

  4. Thanx for the reply.

I m aware abt the otput level or my mobo being too low to drive the speakers directly..so can u suggest me an amp/volume control unit that will accept the connections from the speakers and enable me to connect them to the back of my comp.?
For now i will try opening up d entire main unit to clean out dust and see if that works...but i too hv the feeling its dead.
can u suggest me a good amp thru which i can connect the spaekers and be able to get 5.1 for my comp ?

  5. Any 5.1 A/V receiver will work. One with optical S/PDIF in would be best but one with five or six analog inputs will work too. For the latter make sure you can configure your computer's audio outputs to FR, FL, RR, RL, center and sub. For example this Sony receiver has optical S/PDIF inputs:

    http://www.amazon.com/Sony-STR-DH510-5-1-Channel-Theater-Receiver/dp/B0038W0IZO/

But 5.1 A/V receivers start at about US$150. So unless those speakers are especially good you might just consider a new 5.1 surround sound system.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007679%20600010685&IsNo...eId=1&name=5.1

By the way, your current receiver doesn't appear to have any way of getting an external 5.1 audio source into it. It will only do 5.1 from DVD. So even if it worked you wouldn't be able to use it for 5.1, only stereo.

  6. Ya..i see no point spending 150 bucks for a new receiver alone.....and a used one will cost me around 100 bucks...so i will be better off either repairing this one or buying a whole new system. The good thing abt repairing this system against buying an old used one will be no struggle in getting the compaitability right...and plus i will get to use the various other features of my current system

You are absouletly right abt the fact that my system will only output stereo..i just found out that my system is not a real 5.1...for it to be 5.1 it shuld hv 6 speakers right ? Mine only has 5. Also, my system uses some dolby pro logic II technology to output sound on all speakers.
So now my aim is only to get sound on all 5 spekaers when i connect them to my comp...i don mind whether they are stereo or fake 5.1 type...so what should i be doin to acheive this...just connect the HT to my comp thru the tv/sat ports...can u explain me how the connections will go and what type of cables i will need.

Also, since the main unit goes off even f i dont connect the speakers which means that the main unit (receiver) is at fault and not the speakers right. i don want to end up repairing the main unit or buying a new receiver and then figuring out that the speakers have gone bad too ? is there a way i can confrim that the speakers are perfectly alrite..(to me they look alright..the wires are intact and they are in proper shape...just that they are very dusty for now )

    Thanx !

  7. Your receiver has an output for a powered subwoofer, the "missing" sixth channel. The bigger problem is that you can't get six channel audio from the computer into that receiver. The receiver has no inputs for multichannel audio. You can test the speakers by plugging them into some other device with speaker outputs -- an old stereo system, for example.
