I have ripped Die hard 4 to my hard drive using anydvd hd to image and i have decrypted it to MKV using handbrake and when i watch the film from the original disk there are parts of the film when the bad guys speak in another language and subtitles appear so you know what they are saying but when i watch the mkv file the subtitles dont appear and there is no way to access them on the player and there is no way to select them using handbrake cause you are using the actual file from the disk because handbrake cant read the full disk so it cant find the subtitles and they aren't on the file i am using.
I used makemvk to start with and they didn't appear on that either and after some investigation on the makemkv site there is no option for these subtitles to appear.
So what would be the best program to use to get these subtitles to appear as an mvk file.
Thanks in advance for any help

The short way to describe it would be, extract the PGS sub using MkvExtractGui-2. Load it into BDSup2Sub. Look at the subs. If there are only a dozen or so subs, it's probably all forced subs. If there are hundreds of subs, it may say at the bottom 20 forced subs found. In any case, export them as ifo/sup (check "only forced subs" during the export if it found forced subs.) Use MkvMergeGui to take that stream, and the audio and video from the .mkv file, and output an .mkv with only forced subs. Now put it into Handbrake or whatever encoder that automatically burns in the subtitle track.
See Guides for each tool how to do each operation.Last edited by MilesAhead; 17th Jul 2010 at 16:21.

Thanks but all that seems a bit of a hassle is there not a program that can do the whole lot and make it mvk at the same time, i am trying bd rebuilder at the momemt and maybe a couple of other things if all them fail then i will prob have to try this.

It's my understanding that with PGS subs, there's no way to know if the subs are forced until you read through the file. At least that's what the author of MakeMKV says. The subtitles are almost always the fly in the ointment when it comes to one-click encoding/conversion. Some set top box players will pick up PGS subs like they do sup DVD subs, from a disc image, some won't. I have WD HDTV for USB player. It won't. Also it has sync issues. So I have to burn them in. If you can live with "good" profile in BD Rebuilder, it will probably encode the video at least 2 hours faster than any other program. That leaves plenty of time to extract subs and format them for burn in. If you need guidance see the BD Rebuilder thread on Doom9 Forum.

Ok so i managed to extract the subs and make them srt then i decrypted the file in handbrake and i added the subtitles but the forced in and burned in options were greyed out so i just clicked hte default option, so after it was done i started watching on my usual player which is mpc home cinema and it didn't work so then i checked it on vlc player and for some reason it worked on that, if i load the subtitle file in on mpc it slows down and sticks briefly when the subtitles are played.
So does anyone know how to get them to work in mpc as that is the program i use and dont want to change.Last edited by adamf154; 18th Jul 2010 at 22:30.

It seems like Media player classic is the problem for this particualr film, i tried the makemkv copy and the handbrake copy and both have the subtitles in it, and you can pick what ones you want, the option in mpc for that is not there so it looks like media player classic needs a few updates its a pity cause i use that for other things, but i did find 4.3gb mvk copy of the film on my desktop but i have no idea how it got there im thinking it was maybe ripbot, , but i have been doing trying so many things but it worked fine and had the subtitles in it and worked on mpc so if i can find out what ui used then i can do it again and make iy bigegr then i would know what to use next time i have this problem

Success finally i have got something to work with, first of all ripbot worked with the subtitles and it worked on media player classic HC ripbot just needs an option for file size rather than the numer 20 to work with regards quality. Secondly reading this post has helped me identify what i was looking for in mpchc for subtitles for the handbrake copy - https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/323393-Subtitle-problem-when-decrypting-bluray

If you have a BD file structure to start with then you don't have to mess with quality numbers in BD Rebuilder. I just use a custom output size of 8032 MB. If I have an .mkv file as source, it takes about 5 minutes to mux it to BluRay disc format, then I just input that.
But the more ways there are to skin the cat the better. If one tool won't work you can try another on a particular input.http://milesaheadsoftware.org/
