I have an old Celeron 2.6 with 2 gbs of DDR memory running Windows 7 32 bit. It's purpose is a file and print server for my three other client computers (2 are Win 7 and one is Linux Mandriva)...
I'm thinking on replacing the Celeron 2.6 and socket 478 Mach Speed (Biostar) mobo with a Sempron 140 2.7 and a GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H AM3/AM2+/AM mobo. I'll also have to purchase DDR2 memory...
Will I notice any difference in speed between the two cpus? One of the attractions of the Sempron 140 is it's low power usage (45 W). Can't recall what the Celeron is rated for power consumption... So power usage is another concern....
My other computers
AMD X3 710 Windows 7 64 bit (photo editing, 3D rendering)
AMD 3500 Linux - web surfing, bittorent client
Intel E2180 - Windows 7 32 bit Video encoding, video capturing (running 32 bit Windows as there is no 64 bit driver for my Hauppauge PVR250 tv capture card)...
Cheers
On occasion I do use it for video encoding but it's sole purpose is a file & print server...
TIA

A computer with that age does not worth spending money on. Buying a new computer on a deal from a store will beat any upgrade. Cheaper options to give a new life to a computer is switching to Ubuntu and / or installing OS on Raid 0.

I have extensively researched the upgrade options, from a 6 years old computer as I would like to recycle what I have, the case, hard drives, and burners are about all that can be re used and even then the advise from techies is that using old parts with new can be problematic.
I would save $145 if I built it myself over a Dell computer, for instance, so for me the effort of building the thing and possible problems is not worth it, better to donate what I do not want to a recycle place, you also get a new operating system, and windows 7 is very nice.
