  1. Hi, I am totally new to Youtube and have run into an issue. I did not realize that using music on a video was copyright infringement (duh!). I have several videos uploaded that contain small snippets of songs and I'm running into this copyright infringement issue. I want to do what is right but would also like to be able to continue to have music on these videos. Is there anyway to buy the rights to songs or buy the song as an MP3 and use it? I see other people that have videos with music and below it lists the name of the artist and offers to let you buy from Amazon, etc. How do I go about this??

The issue here is based on what agreements youtube has with the media companies. The files on youtube get sampled to check for copyrighted music. When it detects music for which they have an arrangement the ads are enabled automatically, where others are removed based on an alternate agreement. It don't see a scenario when a regular joe would be able to license music being that these media companies deal in bulk.

It's a big, giant mystery that nobody seems to want to explain...or a big, giant mystery that someone feels they have no need to explain(to us low-lifes).

Some people claim it's possible to fool YouTube's counterparanoia by slightly speeding/slowing the audio playback rate, and/or by adding 30 seconds of silence to the beginning of the audio track. WARNING: I don't know whether YouTube has been updated in order to make these workarounds useless.

Their digital fingerprinting technology is impressive. I tested it once by butchering a video file and seeing how long it would take for it to find it. It took about a week.

  6. So how do you go about figuring out what songs you are allowed to use??? I see people with Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc. but I don't see Lynyrd Skynyrd as an option in the swappable songs. Also, I'm not interested in trying to fool YouTube I want something on the up and up.

Better send the questions to the YouTube management team.

OTOH, such copyright-protection technology is surely expensive, and (I suppose) it requires HUGE databases to store the samples of all the "protected" stuff. No surprise then that Google's search skills keep sucking more and more , there is not money enough to be good at two different things at the same time.

The amount you're "allowed" by fair use depends to a great extent what use you are putting it to. If all you're doing is trying to spice up your video a bit and make it more interesting, then you certainly need to get permission if you use enough of it for it to be recognized. So you might get away with around 7 notes of a song before getting busted

how to get permission/pay for the rights.

There's a guy or organization I read about that's trying to remedy all this by approaching the record companies and getting the release of their songs available online making it much more accessible & affordable to indi film producers

    It's probably on google somewhere...

  12. I wonder about the music used in public domain files? If you know a local band that writes their own music maybe you can cut a deal with them to use there music giving them some exposure in exchange.
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.
