My project is to convert VCR security tapes to digital video and then analyze the recordings for activity (i.e. cars, people walking, etc.)

I'm looking for software that can analyze the digital video and help me identify where the activity is in each recording so that I do not have to watch each one (30, 6 hour tapes). I'm having trouble locating software/plugins that will speed the process up. I think I may be using the wrong terminology in my searches. I've been searching for "motion detection" which has led me to VideoHelp.com, however, I'm not interested in detecting the camera motion or eliminating camera shake because they cameras are fixed. I need to detect motion in the subject video. The cameras are out doors so tree branches blow slightly in the wind and shadows move with the sun. I want to mask this motion and only detect human movement.

If anyone can suggest software or better search terms I'd greatly appreciate it.

    My Setup:
Hardware: Win7 64-bit Desktop the 12 GB of memory. I'm capturing the VCR output to a Hauppauge 2250 TV/Video Capture card through the component input using Hauppauge WinTV 7. This results in a MPEG2 .ts (Transport Stream).

Software: Hauppauge WinTV 7, DGIndex, AVISynth, VirturalDub

Filters I've tried: I've tried the MSU Motion Estimation Filter, it is helpful, but I'd like to find something better suited to my task.

Search terms I've tried: mpeg2, histogram, motion detection, cctv, security, "object tracking"
