Been using RipIt4Me for a while now with DVD Decryptor and ShrinkIt. Never had this error before. Is there a way around it? Kinda bummed about it.

Develoment stopped. That's correct, but RipIt4Me is my favorite tool to rip a DVD, too.
..If there is no special copy protection...

The message "Couldn't create target directory" is thrown if the original has special charcters in the disc's name, like '<' e.g. Have a look. But most discs that use those characters in the name have a copy protection that RipIt cannot handle anyway.

Some studios use a new form of copy protection that came out after development on DVDDecrypter and DVDShrink stopped. They don't know how to deal with it. RipIt4Me did know how to deal with it, but the author was forced to abandon the program or face a potentially ruinous lawsuit in the US courts. That copy protection is known as ARCCOS and it constantly changes, so RiptIt4Me can only deal with the very first attempts at ARCCOS. It's now woefully out of date. Most studios don't use this method of copy protection, but Disney and Sony are among the ones who do. DVDFab HD Decrypter and AnyDVD are your only options now to deal with ARCCOS. ggtop could be right as well, but probably your problem is with ARCCOS.

  5. Myth and ggtop, as you indicate, reports of the death of RipIt4Me's usefulness are somewhat exaggerated. I still use it all the time. Does it sometimes choke? Sure, but not enough to abandon it completely.

I'm curious about your post's title, since I've never been asked by RipIt4Me to "create a target directory" for me. I manually designate the target directory name, and so have never had such a problem--so far. Have you tried that? (I hope I'm not insulting your experience level with this question--I didn't even know it was an option.)

My experience with RipIt4Me choking on newer protection schemes:

o If a check on disc contents shows many more gigabytes of files than is possible on a DL disc, RipIt4Me won't work.

o If RipIt4Me tells me to re-rip a particular file because the disc might be dirty or damaged, and a visual inspection suggests that's not true, RipIt4Me probably won't work, although cleaning the disc sometimes DOES allow RipIt4Me to finalize its processes.

And, as jman98 suggests, when RipIt4Me fails, DVDFab HD Decrypter and AnyDVD then become your options.
