  3. Where else did I post it? I have 2 DVD players; one Toshiba, and one Magnavox, and I asked about each one once. Please advise, glad to see you're on it!

    1) Most DVD players sold in North America CANNOT be made region free. If you can't find a hack for your player, then it probably does not exist.
    2) Hacks that worked in the past may not work on your particular player because either the hack works only on models sold in other parts of the world that have different hardware from North American models or during the production the hardware on your model has changed somewhat from earlier models and those changes prevent the hack from working now.
    3) There are only two brands of BluRay players at this time (Oppo and Momitsu/Hitecker) that can be made region free for BluRay and DVD playback. Maybe 3 or so BluRay players sold OUTSIDE of North America can be made region free for DVD only playback by entering a hack code. So there almost certainly is no hack for your BluRay player that you talked about in your other thread. BluRay region free playback requires either a firmware mod (Oppo) or a hardware mod (Momitsu/Hitecker) that has to be done after the player leaves the manufacturer. BluRay licensing expressly forbids the manufacture of region free capability for BluRay and/or DVD playback on all BluRay players. The fact that a mere handful of BluRay players sold in other parts of the world can be made region free for DVD playback by entering a code is rather exceptional and who knows how long this will last until Hollywood cracks down on it. The cases of Oppo and Momitsu/Hitecker are different because those machines are modded by people other than the manufacturers.

You can blame Hollywood for this as the pressure they put on the manufacturers to stop making region free players is enormous and most have caved in. The situation is rather grim in the USA and Canada as today the vast majority of players sold are region locked and cannot be unlocked in accordance with the wishes of the Sith Lords in Hollywood.

  5. Thank you all so much for your help. I have little to no techinical knowledge (outside of medicine!). Your valuable input has helped me to decide to buy a region free DVD player. Again, my thanks and admiration to those of you who share your knowledge.
