My girlfriends sister use's Windows Vista and I made this face when I found out

I've never personally upgraded from Vista to Win7 but I know that your able to get a free upgrade or something like that.

Soooo, how do you do it??

She uses Vista Home Basic or Home Premium, can't remember which one.

I remember there being a deadline so I hope it's not too late.

I think you should keep your hands off your girlfriend's sister's computer.

    This is the current upgrade.

free upgrades were only offered in the last month or so of sales of vista machines. unless it came with a free upgrade coupon when purchased it, she's not going to get a free copy of win7.

Do you have XP drivers for that computer?

I'll just do what I did with my other computers. Put the drivers on a flash drive. Or I'll just go to the manufacturers website. Why do you ask?

Many recent computers that shipped with Vista lack XP drivers at the manufactuer site.

I haven't done much thinking about it really since I planned on just getting Win7 but as soon as I get the computer model I'll look it up to be 100% sure.

I know off the top of my head that it was a Gateway GT?????? If anything I hope she still has the Vista/Driver disc. She'll just have to suffer, even though I don't see how a web browser could have troubles with Vista

I only had troubles with it running games and asking me a bunch of questions when I try to open a file and crap like that.. Can't wait till I get my Win7 disc though, I hear great things about it.

Trying to install Vista drivers for XP might not work or work properly on a XP install. I agree with edDV and recommend that you make sure that XP drivers are available for the computer before trying to install XP. You can use the Vista/Driver disc that you were mentioning to see what drivers you will need.

Well it's pretty obvious that you need to make sure you can get drivers for a computer before you reformat it. I'm not new to this but thanks for the concern.

I always put my drivers on a flash drive before I do anything and make sure that the drivers will work for the OS I'm am going to use.

In case anyone still cares, the last day to apply for the free upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 online was February 28 and mailed applications had to be postmarked March 1. I almost procrastinated too long and missed the deadline myself.

Now an upgrade must be purchased, and upgrading from a qualifying product costs about the same as an OEM copy of Windows 7.
