  1. That's what I'm trying to make & view my VCDs with, no luck so far. I can make VCDs that play in other DVD players, just not mine. The M101 is notoriously picky about media, but I wonder if it isn't Toast as well that's causing troubles. Any Mac users out there have any luck with the M101?

  2. How do *you* make VCDs?

I am having all sorts of problems trying to get 4 minute music video clips that have the extension .MPG to encode into VCD format.

I have media cleaner 4.0.2 but that fails to encode the audio, the video is just perfect!

As for your problems, have you tried using different CDs? Silver ones work best.

  3. All I do is use Toast or QT Pro & the Toast VCD extension to export files as mpg files and it works like magic. I've never monkeyed with other apps. Are these videos your own, or coming from other sources? All my videos are my own from DV to iMovie to Toast, but one I got from the internet gave me trouble because there was no soundtrack. I bet I could use QT pro to futz with it to make Toast like it, but haven't yet (cause I can't view my VCDs on the samsung). Maybe comparing the attributes of usable mpg files vs the ones giving you trouble in QT might help.

As for silver media being better, can you reccomend a specific make/model (eg. SuperCD Brand CDR 24x part no. blah-blah-blah)? I've heard silver is better too but all CD media looks alike to me sealed up in boxes & spindles. I've also heard very light blue/green media is good for the M101 but again I have no idea if brand XYZ is blue, gold, or what. I'v also heard that Memorex CDRW 4x discs are good, but they have not worked for me.

  4. I found that most of the cheaper brands are silver CDs, as for brand names....

Im in the UK, and Staples and Maplin always have some form of "Special offer"

Everyone I know says Kodak "Ultima Silver / Gold" CDRs are good, Ive never had a problem with them, and they are cheap as well !

In your post you talk about using Quicktime Pro, I only have the "player" is this why I am having some problems? Is it worth while downloading the full version from Apple?

The MPEG files I am using have been made by someone else, and yes they do have an audio track, they play perfectly in quicktime player.

I have used (tried) Media cleaner to convert the files but the audio option is not highlighted...

  5. Are you saying you've been able to play VCDs burned to Kodak "Ultima Silver / Gold" CDRs on a Samsung M101?

  6. I have not been able to produce a vcd yet....

I dont know anyone with a Samsung M101 burner, I use a Yamaha 4260, and never had a Kodak CDR fail on me in that.

You never answered my question about Quicktime Pro, is this the reason I am having all the problems, I only have Quicktime player.

  7. Jimb, do you have toast? It takes .mov files and turns them into VCD ready mpegs, and adds an "export to Toast" option in Quicktime pro, iMovie, etc. Very nice. This is pretty much the extent of my knowledge of how to make VCDs.

I think you misunderstand my topic - the M101 is a commerical DVD player (not a writer), and it is very picky about what media it likes you to use when making homemade VCDs. I'm able to make VCDs that play in friends players/macs, etc, but the M101 (my own player) won't see the discs I make. It's not an encoding thing, I'm asking other folks who have made VCDs that play on an M101 exactly what make & model of CD media they used (apparently there aren't any such people!).

As to your difficulty making VCDs, I really don't know. Have you started a topic specific to your problems?

  8. Did not realise that the Samsung was a standalone DVD player, sorry.

I remember reading that many DVD players use only one laser diode to read both CD and DVD disc formats and that can cause the player to be fussy.

Have you tried using CDRW discs? they are better in some DVD players.

Thanks for the tip about starting my own link for the problems I am having. I shall gather up all the information I have about what happens when I do various things.

  9. I was able to burn play a .mpg VCD using compusa silver CD-RW media and I have a Samsung 101. Did just try to burn ANOTHER .mpg vcd but the Samgsung wouldn't play it, I think it's because it's PAL and the Samsung will only play NTSC.

I do not know how to convert a muxed mpeg 1 pal movie into a burnable NTSC one or i would verify this theory.

  10. Woah, ok nevermind

the Samsung 101 can play PAL or NTSC vcds burnt on compUSA CD-RW media. I just had to clean the cd a bit and it went from "unplayable" to working. w00t

    hope this helps!
