  1. What is the best way to make a Region 2 DVD from the UK, region free? I've tried DVD Decrypter, AnyDVD, and DVDFab Decrypter (free version) and nothing has worked for me..
It's possible I could be diong something wrong, but the programs are pretty self explanatory to use, so I don't think I did anything wrong.
Can someone whose successfully done this give me some advice please.

    Thanks!

Any DVD you rip and burn to DVD-R is region free. Your problem is most likely a standards mismatch, i.e. a PAL disc on an NTSC player.

Where are you? I'll guess USA.

There's two things you'll most likely have to deal with: region coding and video format. Ripping using any of the programs you listed should deal with region coding, making the DVD files region-free. But you may still have a PAL->NTSC format issue. Easiest way to deal with that is to use a DVD player that can play both PAL and NTSC formats. Converting the files PAL->NTSC is more difficult, and there's plenty of info in the forums on how to do this (and the pitfalls ).

(I've got a multi-format player, so I don't have any first hand experience with the conversion. Just what I've read & understand, I'm sure others with more experience can give you some specific suggestions.)

  4. What's weird is, my DVD player can play both NTSC and PAL, I bought it specifically for that, but when I put the DVD in, it says invalid region..

  7. I've heard DVDFab Decrypter with the paid version is pretty good at doing this, should I consider investing in that?

  10. hmm, the only one that I could really see it being is DVD-514
That number was on both the box, and the player

  11. That player can be made region free:-

Lets be clear here, if you make a back up of a commercial dvd it should be region free, however I have seen certain software actually ask what region the backup should be , have you actually burnt a backup of the dvd in question or just put it into the drive and run the software (sorry I really do not mean to suggest you are stupid) but folks do not always know, we all started with zero knowledge.

If you use the hack as above for your player it should play your original dvd anyhow.

  12. Thanks. I'll try that.
I tried using DVD Decrypter, that didn't work, errors popped up as it was running through. I tried the free version of DVDFab Decrypter and it seemed to go thru with no problems, I burned it, but when I went to play it, nothing came up, it was like the DVD was blank, which was really weird.
Then I tried AnyDVD, and that went thru with no problems, but when I went to burn it with ImgBurn, it was too big. So, I then ran it thru DVDShrink, it took like 3 hrs to do, I tried to burn it again, and it actually fit, but when I went to play the new burnt DVD, the picture was black and white, and jumpy, and I couldn't do anything with it..

What I wanted to do, was make the original DVD region free, copy it, and use that copy (region free or 0) to make other backups if need be
That's what I thought I'd need to rip it to my hard drive and use another program to make it region free, then burn it

  13. If you have any dvd installed that runs in the background and removes region encoding and backup protection, you can then use dvd shrink on its own to make the backup, it sounds like the original is a dvd 9 size therefore shrinking it that requires 3 hours may be too much shrinking, if you want to install imgburn and use dvd dl blanks (Verbatim).

We need to know what country you are in, what is the program on disc you are backing up and what blanks are you using as they may be suspect. If you are using dvd+R and your software is not book typing the disc to dvd-rom (& your burner may not allow that) that could be your problem.

  14. Well, I just ran it thru DVDFab Decrypter and it went thru with no problems, and I burned it in ImgBurn and it burned perfect and actually worked on my player, but before I did this, I used the hack on my player so it changed it to Region free..so I'm not sure if the DVD burned finally or if it was the player. I'm in States, and I'm using Verbatim DVD-R blanks
