I want to transfer Hi8 to miniDV using a Sony TR81 and a TRV33. Using RCA the image is visible and audio audible; only image is visible with S-video. I have changed AV to DV OUT. I want to record onto a miniDV tape - not use the passthrough feature (sending the digital signal to a Mac). Is this possible? Any guidance is much appreciated.

s-video carries no audio so use both the s-video plus the rca for audio

Excellent - thank you. But there is another glitch which I should have mentioned earlier. I cannot record onto the TRV33. I can see the footage in the monitor, while the TRV33 is in PLAY mode. But if I change that to CAMERA/RECORD, it does not record. I am sure I am missing something very obvious.

No, there is nothing like this in the menu in CAMERA mode, nor in PLAY mode.

Here are the "dubbing" directions on P-94 of the TRV33 manual.
First connect Hi8 camcorder with S-Video + RCA White and Red to A/V inputs on the TRV33. Don't connect Yellow.

Thank you - both - so much for your assistance. Works just fine.
