Hello all,
I was wondering what you all are doing if it comes to (free) music? Is there a good place to download some music /mp3
that you have good experience with and that is copy right free?
I also heard that using the first "20-30 sec" of ANY kind of music is free to use? Any comments on that...
Thanks for any input!

Whether that is true or not depends on the law where you live. In the USA there is a legal doctrine called Fair Use that MIGHT (heavy emphasis on that word "might") apply to what you suggest, but the courts have not been willing to explicitly define what is and what is not "fair use" and have chosen to decide cases involving it on a case by case basis. Basically, the shorter your excerpt, the more likely you are that Fair Use will apply to you. On the downside, I've known of American TV shows that have paid licensing fees for songs in which only 20-30 seconds were played. And Yoko Ono recently sued the producers of a film for using an excerpt of John Lennon's song "Imagine" in their film. The producers used only an excerpt and did not license it. We can argue whether the case was more about using the song without permission or for not paying for it, but the bottom line is that courts ruled in favor of the film makers that the excerpt was protected under Fair Use.Originally Posted by B-Twien Bytes
Others can comment on sources for free music. I know they exist, but I don't keep up with that as it doesn't interest me at all. -

Thanks for your clear answer...I guess we here in Mali, West-Africa tend to think we are free from any USA/European law...
But any how, wondering why you say the free music doesn't interest you at all?! Not using music or ...? -
My musical tastes are about things that aren't free. For example, I bought all the Beatles remastered CDs that came out recently. Those aren't free. I don't have any real interest in current music. I tried, but I can't get into it. If it's free, I probably won't be interested. Not that I am a big supporter of the recording industry as I am not, but if somebody is giving it away for free, it's probably music that won't appeal to me.

There are bootleg sites that have music where musicians have allowed people to record their live shows. There is a lot of good stuff on these sites but it's not high quality recordings since the guy recording is in the audience somewhere with portable equiptment that has nowhere near the recording capabilities a studio or the band itself has. Most of this stuff is from older bands or new bands that nobody has heard of that need to get their music heard.
EDIT: Also, if you visit websites of bands that you like, sometimes they offer a free download or two to get you to listen to and hopefully buy their CDs. It's not the musicians that are the aholes, it's the music industry. -
Well with the recent Pirate Bay fiasco. Do not count on it, they can try in Mali and get nowhere, but with the One World Order aka New World OrderOriginally Posted by B-Twien Bytes

Thanks for your answer. I guess in a way I do agree, although I do not have that kind of a budget to go around and buy stuff
@DarrellS
Good thinking, I might give that a try.
If anybody has good suggestions in the direction of a package of music library like BackTraxx 1 - Digital Juice - for $99,-, I'll be interested!
Thanks a lot! -
You could try this site for the music you seem to be looking for. Seems to be free.

Depending upon what type of music you are looking for Ghost Notes is one place to get royalty free music:
http://ghostnotes.blogspot.com/
Just let the artist know that you are going to use his pieces and give him credit.
The Music is more ambient than lively but works well for many things.
Another option is to check royalty free music on EBay, there are usually a few packages available there.
