  1. I thought when I upgraded to qt pro that it installed the mpeg playback component needed to use mpeg streamclip. But now I get a message saying I don't have it? I thought I've had it for a few years now but all of a sudden it's gone. Am I nuts? I've upgraded to snow leapard andthe latest version of quicktime (I think it's X). Now things seem to be weird. Sure, maybe it's me. I dunno. Anyone?

  2. MPegStreamClip requires the "Apple MPEG2 component for QuickTime" (and not a QTPro license)
…most of QTPro features directly are available in MPSC (export functions per example)

  5. You know, I try to be a reasonable guy but it just seems to me that Apple could ahve better communicated this and made it a lot easier for those of us that already paid for the component. I wonder how many people just simply repurchased the component because they didn't know better?

while that article helps, I agree, it would have been nice to
see it Printed in the users manual or as a nice one sheet insert
    in the mac packaging.
Also heads up, Rosetta is NOT also installed by default like QT 7.
So if you want those, you have to install them once
    you unpack your new mac.
(if you are upgrading an existing mac, you can check them
to be installed while running the SNL installer).

Locations may have changed, but I don't think corporate policies have. Apple has always had QT basic be free. You can additionally buy QTPro to unlock QT to have editing and export functionality. You can also separately buy MPEG2 decode/playback component. There unfortunately has NEVER been an MPEG2 Export/Encode component, nor an MP3 export/encode component. To do those, you always have to get another app that has that functionality internally (or with their own components) hardwired.

If you HAD MPEG2 playback, but don't, you should be able to get it back if you're still using the same MAJOR version of QT (like 7.1.x vs. 7.2.x, NOT 6.x vs. 7.x).

  8. I finally got it by logging into my apple account and re-downloading it.

My whole point is that Apple caused this problem and should have been more vocal in how to solve it. Personally, the only way I got it solved was through forums like this. So let me get this straight, I pay for something from Apple, then I pay for an updated version of something that take my mpeg-2 playback component and trashes it, and Apple has nothing to say about it. I came one click away from having to buy it again. What a crock. I'm a long time Apple customer and deserve better. They trashed my file through an update. They should tell us how to fix it.

    So what else is new?

    I've had to friggin' pay for MPEG2 playback 3 times! (v.3 -> v.4, v.5 -> v.6, v.6 -> v.7)
    And Pro capability 5 times. (v.3, v.4, v.5, v.6, v.7)

It's gotten so that I only do it for the machine that I'm doing my commercial encoding/editing. Everything else, I use QT alternative or other non-QT avenues altogether.

It's like buying a razor and having to pay for $30 razor blades!. I am SOOOO tired of this corporate milking BS.
