I encode to SVCD using Flask /w bbMPEG. The subtitles are added by flask and encoded permanently into the MPEG file.

I read on this site that the SVCD standard supports up to 4 subtitles. Does anyone know how to add such non-permanent subtitles to SVCD discs, so I can turn them on and off on my DVD player?

    Thank you.

It sure does with DVD's (of course). I don't have a test SVCD with soft subtitles, so I am not sure.

Presing the subtitle button on the remote it does not signal me that this is an invalid option (as it does with others), so I think it does.
The player is a Revoy 2200.

    Cheers,

  5. No. The subtitles (overlay graphics and text -- OGT) in a SVCD stream are multiplex in the MPEG file.

You can extract the original DVD subtitles into a form usuable by I-Author by using a program called "Subrip" on the ripped VOB files.

Go to doom9's site and read his guides for more detailed information.

My SAMSUNG DVD 711 seems to support soft subtitles too, coz in SVCD mode the sub option can be enabled/disabled during playing... But it doesn't ! I tried to burn SVCDs with soft subs, it works on TOKAI 715 DVD player but not on my SAMSUNG... So it's not a proof !

philips svcd designer also supports the authoring of soft encoded subs. You can use subrip to create the subs for this program also. You can download the software from philips homepage but you will have to pay a pretty hefty price to unlock it.

Fifou, I think all dvd players let you toggle between sub streams regardless of what format you are playing, at least every dvd player I've used does. But unless it supports svcd subs you wont see anything except when playing a dvd.

  10. Does anybody know how to burn text format subtitles into SVCD but to be removabe - not nonremovable (like SSA plugin for VirtualDub do) ?
Is it possible at all or I need to have VOB and extract from there ?

  11. Check this forum:
There is a SVCD-testfile with switchable subs available. Download it and check your player
There is a How to ... make your own subs from scratch guide

I Author makes CVCD subtitles, with Philips SVCD Designer or submux (freeware) you can make SVCD standard selectable subtitles.

The subtitles are generated as bitmaps that are then multiplexed to the program stream, so using text format selectable subtitles is not possible (unless you use a program to convert the text to bitmaps first, but I'm not aware of such a program). Subrip can rip the subtitles as Philips SVCD format bitmaps. Programs can be found at www.doom9.org

  14. Yes RoopeT , there is a prog called meastroSBT
It reads srt ssa ... and it can generate BMP's for you in NTSC or PAL format. Then you can use your submux to multiplex them together.

Ok, thanks for the info. Haven't used Maestro, isn't it a program for DVD creation? (or I'm I complely wrong)

If it is an DVD authoring program, can you still use it for SVCD's?

  16. This MeastroSBT is not like MeastroDVD,

I forgot the author but it's a must-have-tool for divx subs -> SVCD subs
It works great with submux for burning with EasyVCD or TSCV
    Look at doom9 downloads
