Compress hard drive to save space/Index drive for faster searching?

When I go to Hard Drive (C)
Then go to Properties
Then click on the General tab

I get this:
Compress this hard drive to save disk space

Index this drive for faster searching

What do these mean?


How is this different than a defragmentation?

In Windows desktop, press F1 (Help) and search on these phrases.
