  1. i asked this before at other forums, and never got a clear answer so i'll ask it one more time: is it possible to add some sort of 16:9 tag so that if i play it on a 16:9 tv, this one will swich automatically to this format...

and i've heard that with real 16:9 streams, there is information in the black borders that is used if the tv zooms in... is that allso included with a mpg file? (if it's possible (question above) )

    thanks

  3. Hi,

to my knowledge this flag exists for DVDs only. If you play anamorphic VCDs, you have to switch your TV to 16:9 mode manually. There are TVs though, which perform an automatic zoom, e.g. if you are watching a letterbox movie (black borders), the TV zooms in vertically, and if you have a 4:3 movie (an anamorphic VCD actually is a 4:3 format) it stretches the image horizontally.

    Hope this helps,
    Dirk

  4. thanks for helping!

well my tv doesn't zoom automatically, only if the stream contains that 16:9 flag, but what exactly is it? and why doesn't (s)vcd have it?

(oh sorry, but what exactly is an anamorphic vcd? does this only mean that it is 4:3 format?)

  5. An anamorphic image is a 16:9 image using all the pixels of a 4:3 image, i.e. you don't have the black borders and the full vertical resolution is used, so you don't waste pixels for the black borders. However the image is therefore stretched vertically (egg-heads). The 16:9 then stretches the image horizontally so that the aspect ratio is correct again. Most of the movie DVDs are anamorphic.
I do anamorphic VCDs from anamorphic DVDs, even if on my old TV I had to switch manually. The resolution is simply better.
