Some hacks don't work on players sold in the USA and Canada. Also sometimes manufacturers make hardware changes during production that break hacks that worked in the past. For example, a hack that worked fine 8 months ago may not work now because the model available now has different hardware in it.

Hollywood has convinced almost all of the manufacturers to stop making players that can be made region free. In the USA and Canada it is incredibly difficult to find such players and getting worse every day. For example just a few years ago Philips almost didn't make any players that couldn't be made region free and now we're getting reports that they've got some players that can't be unlocked. That just shows you how bad it is.
