  2. I see lots of "free downloads" for chm to pdf converters, but they turn out to be trial versions of shareware.

    Yeah same. It's no biggie, but it would be handy, as chm has limited print options.

    (I don't have Acrobat, I use Foxit Reader)...

    I open the file then save it as PDF using 'Bullzip PDF printer' - a virtual printer that is selected like any other printer.

    Try Atlantis Word Processor.
    If it opens .chm (I don't have it on this computer to try, sorry) then sure you can save it as PDF. You'll need to add Ghostscript and Cute PDF Writer (both free). Or maybe it'll work with Foxit Reader too and no need for Atlantis since Cute PDF Writer is a "fake" printer that when selected "prints" to PDF file (instead of printing output on your printer).

    Use the CutePDF http://www.cutepdf.com/ virtual PDF printer (free).
    Just open the chm with the built-in Windows reader and use the "print"option.
