I tried to write an SVCD on a CD-RW with Nero5.5.7.2 Creating/selecting the mpeg file and preparing to burn the disk goes without any problems, but then...

First of all, Nero says the CD-RW is not empty and offers to erase it. The disk *is* empty, but formatted. Is this how it is supposed to work?

Secondly, after having created the disk successfully, I tried to run it in my Sony DVD DDU1621 but it is rejected with an unsupported format error.

When I put it in my Pioneer DVD444 player, it seems to think the disk is an (audio) CD, at least it says CD in the display, in stead of (S)VCD. It reports 78 minutes of data, although I put only 10 minutes on the disk. Screen is black, no sound.

What is the problem here, is it Nero. the fact that I'm using CD-RW or is it me doing something wrong ?

    Thanks in advance,

    Han

PS tried to create DVDs the same way and got the same results

are you creating dvds and svcds the same way or what do you mean?

you must burn svcd as svcd www.vcdhelp.com/nerosvcd.htm , I have made several svcds with nero and they work perfect on my dv-444.

I created mpeg files for vcd, svcd and dvd using pinnacle studio7. Used nero to burn a VCD, worked just fine. Tried svcd, nothing. Tried dvd, again nothing. I selected the create SVCD and DVD options in Nero, respectively, so that should be OK. No menus and just a single mpeg file.

I just tried Ulead DVD MovieFactory and this time SVCD just perfect on the Pioneer444 including menus etc. The Sony DVD player in my PC still complains about an invalid format but for me that is less important.

Now the weird part. For DVD the situation is exactly the opposite. Pioneer444 thinks it's an audio CD but this time on the Sony everything works just perfect, excellent quality.

Should SVCD and DVD work on both machines or is this 'normal' ?

Note: the pioneer DVD444 is a standalone DVD player, the Sony DDU1621 an internal

You're right, I missed that one. My Pioneer444 indeed does not support miniDVD. Too bad because the picture quality is great on my PC with 17" TFT screen ;-)

Anyway, this is good enough for now, SVCD works great, and now I'm off to the shop to get some more CDRs to store all the final versions. I'll use the RWs to test the menus etc.

    Thanks again.
