  1. Why is MKV format so unsupported at bluray standalone players? Is this the same situation as it was for mp3s?

What is actually difference between MKV and H.264 MPEG4? If I understand right, MKV is only container, so it contains mpeg4 h.264 and some audio file with subtitles somewhere.

I'm thinking of converting DVD and BLU RAY movies, please suggest which format will be the best to keep the quality of everything. Is this MKV, MPEG4, XVID, WMV? I will also like to know which programs are good to convert .VOB to MPEG4, IPOD, DivX and WMV.

H.264 is the hot format right now.

Sony has no interest in helping you "back up" Blu-ray discs or DVDs.

MKV is a container. h.264 is a video compression standard.

h.264, mp3, etc are International Standards, arrived at after years of deliberation by 100's or more of the world's top IT and CE corporations and research institutions. They have a vested interest (think $Billions) in the successful implementation of the standard.

MKV is well thought out, and is a beautiful, versatile example of Open Source collaboration, But it is basically a "standard" only that there is one agreed-upon format. It was arrived at by the desires of consumers and (for lack of a better or nicer term) "hobbyists". Because it had such a huge opensource development forum, it is probably as well thought out as most of those "standards" you see elsewhere, but the Mountain is going to have to move to Mohammed before we see common producer/consumer enthusiasm and investment in it. Look at DivX, it's still hasn't made HUGE inroads into CE devices, and it had to go corporate to do even that!
