I have some 8mm video films that I want to transfer to DVD. How can I do this?

  2. Go to www.google.com and search on "convert 8mm to dvd".

You will get about 198,000 hits, a lot of them companies offering to do it for you for a fee.

However, there are also some "how to's" you can read that may give you enough background information and insights such that you can do it yourself, saving this forum for those specific questions and problems you might face.

Some I noticed (without having ANY idea of their worth):

Good luck! And let us know how it goes!

"8mm video films" is a VERY confusing term, since there are 2 vastly different media formats: 8mm video (magnetic tape in a small videocassette) and 8mm film (celluloid movie media spooled onto a plastic reel for projection).

A bit of clarity about which 8mm media you have can help us steer you in the right direction.

Maybe you should read the Forum rules / Acceptable Use Policy(AUP) that is linked right above the box you wrote your reply in before posting, specifically under Advertising

a cheap way would be to project them on a real screen and shoot them with a DVD disc camera...
an expensive way would be to take them to a lab and have them do it

I currently don't think there is a way to do what your asking since there is no physical way to connect the projector to a computer. The only two ways i know to accomplish this the right way, use some sort of Telecine equipment. The equipment can be had for around $700 - $3000 dollars and you need a camcorder with optical zoom to capture the video on models in this price range.

The low budget way i don't recommend this at all, but hey it works.
Is to set up your projector & screen and use a separate camcorder on a tripod to capture the picture (and sound if there is any). You would want to do this in a darkened room and zoom the camcorder onto the screen as to get as close as possible with out clipping any of picture off. I would suggest using at least a 3ccd camera. You will then have something you can work with on your computer.

If you don't have loads of 8mm films, the best way is to let a specialty service do the job. (If you're in the US, the photo lab at your nearest Walgreen's might have a contact.)

If you want to transfer the films yourself, you'll have to get the equipment. Taking a camcorder and recording a projected movie off the screen is not the best way to go, as you are likely to get offset, flickery, and soft images. Ebay sells telecine boxes that will give you a sharper image, but you will still need either a telecine projector or else a projector that has variable speed (to remove the flicker). Ebay also sells those, but the question is whether it will be worth the money to you. There are posts in this forum about DIY 8mm telecine systems, but that takes A LOT of work.

All that I've mentioned is just for the FIRST stage, getting film images on video. Thereafter, you still have to get the video to a DVD disc. You may find it better to pay someone who does this kind of work every day as a business.

    Good luck.
