Subtitle Frame Rate Conversion.

Hello All,

I have text files for subtitles I had done in Ulead DVD Workshop to video that was hard telecine 29.97 fps.

Now I am taking these files and applying to the same video which I am now did in 24 fps and the old subtitle files are off. I have read posts about converting subtitle images from VOB files using VOBSub. Is there any way to convert a text file from Note Pad so that it becomes compliant with the 24 fps video? Basically, the subtitles are too slow.

Please any assistance would be appreciated as I would hate to go back an re-time these subtitles again !

I'm not sure about what format your subtitles are but chances are that SubtitleWorkshop will be able to do what you want.

They were done in Ulead DVD Worshop 2 and I was able to actually export them out of that software as text files in Note Pad. So they are text files.

SubtitleWorkshop supports many different subtitle formats and can adjust for frame rates. But conversion from telecined 29.97 fps to 23.976 film fps should not have changed the running time. Time based subs wouldn't need conversion.

The running time never changed, the subtitles are not in synch with the speech.

I never converted my 29.97 fps to 23.976 fps.

In the beginning, my first production was straight capuring using a video capture card for the video and it was 29.97 fps hard telecine. I used that video in Ulead DVD Workshop 2 and did the subtitling in there. Then I saved the subtitle files.

Now, I remastered my work this time using 24 fps video by converting 23.976 fps VOB files and maintained that frame rate.

Ulead's text files had 29.97 fps at the beginning as a tag in the coding. Now I tried taking the text file in SubtitleWorkshop and I can't seem to get the right settings. What input and output settings am I using? If I make the input and output methods different, it changes the duration of the actual subtitles, which isn't what I need.

I need the subtitles to be re-timed to actually fit the 23.976 fps standard which I am now authoring in Roxio DVDit Pro HD with the whole 2:3 pulldown bit. I take the text file into Roxio and this is where the timing problem happens.

What am I working with, Final Time, Duration or Both? How about frame rate input and output?

Basically, the subtitles are coming on the screen too late. The talking comes first, the text appears after !

Are they off by the same amount throughout the video? For example, 1 second late near the start of the movie and still 1 second late near the end? It's easy to advance/delay the subs or time stretch/compress them with Subtitle Workshop.

No, it starts out good and then the further you go the worse it gets !

The easiest way to adjust the subs in Subtitle Workshop is to note the time where the first sub is supposed to appear, the time the last sub is supposed to appear, then select Edit -> Timings -> Adjust -> Adjust Subtitles, then enter those times. It will proportionally adjust all the subs.

I just tried that on the script but to save time, I tried it on some lines in the beginning, middle and end, and I think it will work. I will post back to let you know what happens once I author the DVD. Thanks.
