    So, what's the best compression format
    for any video file, which is:

    1. easily playable
    2. good video quality
    3. (compromising) sound quality

    AVI with xvid video and mp3 audio is probably the best. Good quality and works on most systems and also dvd divx players and many other portable devices.

    Another option would be MP4 with h264 video and aac audio, very good quality but you neeed a faster computer/cpu and it doesn't work on dvd divx players but on many media centers like xbox 360, ps3, etc.

    Other good all-in-one converters are SUPER, HandBrake, avidemux.
