    Hi
All the encodes that I make to DVD (mostly AVI) turn up choppy, that is every 2-3 seconds the video pauses for less than a second. What can I do to fix this. I searched on the forums already but haven't really found any helpful information on this problem. I'm just a beginner at this so try and be explicit with instructions, I appreciate any help you can offer this forum and been very useful to me.

Possibly your source file is 23.976 frames per second (fps), and when you convert that to DVD, the MPEG-2 video should have a so-called "3:2 pulldown".
If it is indeed 23.976 fps (a.k.a. NTSC FILM), use the "DVD mpeg2enc" preset and check the "Set 3:2" checkbox in the Options tab. (The links have screenshots.)

  3. it might also be a 25 to 29.97 fps conversion problem. if your player can handle pal discs, then if an avi is 25 fps make the output dvd pal format. the player will convert it in hardware better than a software conversion. there will still be minor glitches but that's to be expected.

The 3:2 option fixes the choppiness but when I watch it on my DVD player on my computer the screen has black bars both horizontally and vertically, is there anyway to keep the widescreen effect??

Edit: when I put it to fit to screen it is fine, I'll burn the DVD and see what happens, thanks a lot, I really appreciate all the help, this forum rocks.
