Looking at getting an Imac, been a Win PC user since the beginning, have almost 100 dvd's filled with *.mpg files, was told at a the local best buy that Imacs will do mpeg1, mpeg2, mpeg4. Took one of my discs to store and of course the file wasn't recognized by the Imac. I have seen a lot of info on converting DVD's VOB's to something usable on the mac, but nothing mentions how to convert *.mpg files to something usable on a mac. Before I will purchase a mac I need to know what my options are, if there are even any options. Any help would be appreciated.

For playback, you don't need to convert. Just install VLC media player. It handles just about every media format.
If you want or need to convert, then additional workflow information would get you better advise. What editing app, for what sort of final format? Complex edits or simple cuts? SD or HD or some other size entirely?
In general, the apps that are used to convert VOB files can also convert MPEG-2 files, as they are very similar.

I am mostly a beginner, but, primarily I need to be view my old mpeg2 videos on the mac. Second I would like to be able to make projects using the old mpeg2 video along with the new video (imac) to make a final output for DVD player. I don't have any editing apps for the mac, I don't even have the mac yet, I am open to editing software, thats why I am asking the questions. The video would be SD, simple cuts.
I was using the mpeg2 (*.mpg) cause it was convenient, I could edit the file when needed, I was able to find a dvd player that would play the files, along with my computer, which made for easy access viewing. I would like the mac files to be the same, meaning easy access viewing but I am still learing.
    I appreciate you help.
