  1. I found this quote:

“SDXC is a large-capacity card that can store more than 4,000 RAW images, which is the uncompressed mode professionals use, and 17,000 of the fine-mode most consumers use.” said Shigeto Kanda, general manager at Canon."
and..."dramatically improves consumers’ digital lifestyles by providing the portable storage and speed needed to store weeks of high-definition video..."

The SD cards I’m aware of use MPEG compression, which is not ideal for video editing. This info says the SDXC gives the user the option for uncompressed files. Does anybody have knowledge of this new technology?

    Thanks,

  2. SD cards are just memory cards. they can store any file format. camera raw is a still photo format used in higher end dslr cameras, fine mode stills are lightly compressed jpegs. both very large in size.

the new sdxc cards can hold more and read/write faster.

SD cards are storage devices. They don't use MPEG or any other compression, they just store whatever the device they are in gives them. Current SD cameras use mpeg compression because of the storage limitations. Future cameras that adopt this new technology can be designed to use less compressed and/or uncompressed formats that are ideal for editing. I doubt that current devices will able to use these new SDXC cards, even if you could upgrade the firmware. I didn't find it very clear from the article, (and if it's there I missed it), but I suspect that faster hardware will be required to take advantage of it. I'm curious what the price will look like compared to HDD storage.

  4. Thanks Guys,

I was under the mistaken impression that all those cards use compression. So, if I wanted to I could save a video on an SD card to AVI? I thought miniDV tape was one of the only ways (or the best way) to save to AVI. Evidentially, it still is?

  5. Panasonic and Toshiba are pushing SDXC because they want to use it for HD video,Toshiba is working on a movie kiosk where you can buy a movie and download it to your SDXC card. When the cards come out the prices will be high but in a couple of years they will be reasonable.
