I actually *want* garbed video playback that I can then record and sample in some FX work. Does anyone know of software that won't circumvent copy protection and instead play back a scrambled signal? (I'm planning to capture the playback using screen recording software... its supposed to be garbled anyway so framerate doesn't really matter)

    Thanks so much!

Macro Vision protection is the only one that I know that will play. Most other DVD protections simply through an error code and don't play at all. In the case of MV, it isn't garbled, it simply fades from normal brightness to black and back continously.

If you use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD (Tools -CSS- Cracking Method and check 'None') you get a movie that can be played back, but the screen is pixelated and the audio screwed up.

If you open the encrypted DVD with VirtualDub (using the mpeg plugin), you can save it as AVI and have a video that plays back ditto.
