  1. Question: Do you think there is anything wrong with a full grown adult watching children's TV programmes (primarily cartoons)???

Not talking about adults watching them with their children. I mean grown a full grown Adult who sits on his own watching and enjoying Children's Cartoons?

I don't see what's wrong with it, if one knows they are an adult who has to get up and go to work the next day. Why not escape for a few hours into a childhood fantasy world. How is it any different from watching reality contests or soap operas I say. If it's what you enjoy, but co-workers and other family members think weirdly of you. Think it's a serious thing you need to grow out of.

    Discuss.

I don't see the problem with that. I like cartoons myself and on the rare occasions that I watch TV I might end up watching cartoons if there's nothing else to see.

I see nothing wrong with it. Unless this is the only programming you watch.

SpongeBob is more adult oriented. My som likes that show, and I have watched MANY of them with him. Some of the jokes in it are clearly meant for adults.

  6. I enjoy watching the old cartoons I grew up with. I'm not sure if I enjoy the cartoons themselves or the memories of a happier less stressful time of my life.

I watch lots of cartoons and a fair portion of my DVD collection is strictly animation.
Who gives a shit what other people think?
I know my co-workers think I'm weird for watching so many cartoons, but they also think I'm weird because the majority of television programming that I watch is PBS or the Discovery networks (which I'd say does a pretty good job of evening out all the 'toon watching).
It's not my fault that they're all a bunch of mouth-breathing troglodites...

I don't see how it's any different from watching a lot of Sci-Fi, or Lawyer Shows, or Game Shows, or whatever you happen to enjoy. If you enjoy it, why does it matter what anyone thinks? (Unless it's "reality" shows, that's just sick).

I prefer the old Warner Brothers myself. Best scene ever is the "Rabbit season, Duck Season" skit... FIRE!..

Can't say I make a habit of watching cartoons though except the real adult oriented ones like Family Guy.

As an adult, one must behave like an adult. When I was kid, I used to think as a kid, now I am a man, I think like a man.

I have no problem watching cartoons adult oriented, but I have a serious problem with cartoons for kids.

  15. This reminds me of a time when I was in Fry's, and a cashier gave me some grief when I was trying to buy some Anime Box Sets (roughly $300 worth).
He asked me "Are you sure you want this? It's for kids."
~~A similar thing happened in a wal mart some years back, but I digress~~
To witch I replied, "Dude, look at the rating".
He didn't look, and just said that it was for kids again.
So I told him to get the manager, and he did.
So the manager gets there, and was like "Hey, I haven't seen that one yet, but I heard it's good".
Then I tell him what the cashier was saying, (and made the point that that he aparrently only wants to sell Mature Anime to Kids) and the cashier next to him backed me up, and said that she can't stand that ***hole any more (she was referring to my cashier), and sure enough, he was fired.

As I was getting the bag check at the door, the dude there said "Damn, man, you should return thoes, and go to www.discountanimedvd.com ..." Good advice, and both me and my checkbook are better for it.

Long story short, yeah, the world is full of opinionated, close-minded idiots, but hey, there's still some good people out there.
    Don't sweat it.
Watch what ya like, whatever it may be, and just ignore the nay-sayers.
    8)

Edited to Add: Okay, so, like, not all of the Anime I was buying was rated adults only, but still...

    I say yes with reservations:

Only related material from your own childhood.

Case in point - ROBOTECH and TRANSFORMERS.

I own the Robotech protoculture collection and finally finished the entire series. I love it. Brings back memories. I am still endeavoring on getting Transformers on dvd someday. I also have Voltron and SUPER MARIO BROS cartoons (including SMB3).

I think cartoon movies like the stuff from PIXAR is a different category. Those are partly aimed at adults anyway so they'd stomach it enough to take their kids.

Now things Power Rangers and Kim Possible???? Please get real......
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

IMNSHO, there is nothing wrong in enjoying animation movies,
as long as they are not exceedingly stultifying.

Good shows: Jonny Quest, Fantastic Voyage, The Space Angel, Aeon Flux,
ReBoot, the ORIGINAL Woody Woodpecker, Bugs Bunny and his "comrades",
The Secret Squirrel, The Houndcats, and many many animés(of course) ^___^

Bad shows: Pokémon, Dragon Ball, Digimon, anything Disney, SpongeBob,
Yu-gi-oh, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Rugrats, Dexter's Lab,
Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, Animaniacs, ... and so on.

You're making an assumption that Children's TV automatically means cartoons. I take it to be all shows intended for children (or non-adults).

Why would cartoons be any worse (if you voted this way) than, say, Star Wars...

I'm talking about Children's TV in general but it's 'mainly' cartoons within that genre I watch. I actully would rather have animation to live action myself be it child or adult themed. There is a stigma here in Britain of Animation = Children. The 'popular conscience' here takes one 30 second look at American Dad, Family Guy or Futurama without any deeper though says 'cartoon = it's for kids' moves on.

I'm not a fan of Anime though (with the expection of the animatrix)

    Family Guy
    Futurama
    The Simpsons
    Fairly Odd Parents
    Spongebob Squarepants
The Grim Adventures Of Billy & Mandy
The Secert World Of Alex Mack
    Aaah Real Monsters
    Powerpuff Girls
    American Dad
    Robot Chicken
    Rocko's Modern Life
    Ren & Stimpy
    The Angry Beavers
    South Park

those are all the ones I really like. There are more live action children's series I like but those are British series you'd of never of heard of. I have very very little time for british mainstream television (2 possible expections) what the cattle, er sorry I mean mainstream watch is mindless.

It really depends upon the catoon. If you are watching Barney or Sponge Bob, then yes it's wrong. If you are watching old WB cartoons, South Park, Family Guy, Simpsons, then it's OK.

I would not call simpsons, family guy, or beavis and butthead "childrens cartoons". Those are generally geared to an older clientel.

I find it amusing how you throw woody woodpecker in a category that is not "exeedingly stultifying" but can throw "anything Disney" into a category that is.

To even use the concept "children's tv" is a disgusting bias in my opinion.

Animation, for example, is merely a secondary form of visual art. It is no less "mature" than motion photography, computer graphics, or claymation. It's simply a new visual medium. Shows like King of the Hill, The Simpsons, American Dad and Family Guy are NOT and NEVER HAVE BEEN for children. Even Bugs Bunny was aimed at the adult viewers. Disney Studios would even create war propaganda films for the military during WWII.

Even among animation, why must something like Pokemon be "for kids" when it simply has a clean storyline? Must it be filth like Southpark to be considered "acceptable" for an adult to watch? If so, then that's a pretty big statement, and would explain why our society is so fucked up these days.
