Hi all,
I have a bunch of DVDs that used to play just fine in my Samsung HT-TQ85 but lately, some of the movies that always worked fine, stopped working and I get the Play Prohibited message.
When using a different player, they work fine however.
Since they once worked, I figure it's not a burn or media issue. It must be the DVD player.
Any idea ? Anything I should try ? I tried the region hack for my unit and it didn't change anything.
Thanks for your help.

I've seen one of my DVD players (not Samsung though) get confused and claim that some sort of parental lockout was preventing discs from playing. Since I never set that, that was an interesting error message, but disconnecting it from the power fixed that problem.
Most likely your player is in need of repair or perhaps a firmware upgrade if this is a known problem on the model. You could also try unplugging it from power and seeing if that fixes it. -
Could also be caused by a dirty/failing/weak from age laser. Burned media are harder for a player to read and are typically the first discs to start "having issues".

After many tests with older burned DVDs I have and I know used to work in my player, I realized the info I gave you was wrong (I actually relied on information from my wife that is not the most technology savvy person on this but I was unable to reproduce).
So all my old burns work fine.. only the newer ones don't.
That kind of eliminates the player as the culprit.
Must be my burns.
However, I am using the same burner and same media I always have.
I am trying to burn an ISO and I tried with
- Nero under Windows
- Brasero under Ubuntu
- Nero Linux under Ubuntu
- k3b under Ubuntu
- ImgBurn running in Wine under Ubuntu
All are yielding the exact same result... !
I get "Play Prohibited" in the Samsung HT-TQ85 but when I put the same discs in my chipped classic xbox or my $25 cheapo DVD player I bought for my basement, they work fine.
Are you still thinking it's the player ? ANything else I should try for burning ?
Thanks -
As you are in region 1, are you sure your ISO is region 1?

I'm not sure if it is.. But I did run the region free hack for my player.
I have many DVDs like this, some of which I am sure aren't region 1 but I'm able to play them. -
I'm assuming you've tested the iso on the PC to ensure it works. Try running the file through DVDFabDecrypter and then creating a new iso file.
Since the problem is occuring with various burning apps, you likely have an iso, media, or burner problem.
Have you tried burning any other discs lately that do work?Google is your Friend -
I tried with different media and different burners.
Never questioned the ISO though. I'll give that software a try.
