I would suggest building your own. More control over the components. Then you can be sure you can get one with a firewire port on the motherboard instead of wasting a pci slot for it. PLus many other benefits.....

Though the simpliciyt of a preorder is also understood. I am currently using an HP. I had a HP quite awhile ago as well and liked it as well.

The particular model isn't as important as the components in the computer and Dell offers a multitude of options. For video editing, the consensus seems to be moving to an Intel quad core cpu. The cpu is the heart of the system, so buy the best processor you can afford. You will get a better power supply with the xps 630 which will allow for better overall performance, particularly when you are using an advanced graphics card which can be very power hungry.

    -Consider-
Will you also be purchasing a new monitor, other peripherals, and/or software ? Those costs need to be considered.

Is there anything useful in terms of hardware you can transfer from your old computer to the new one ? Anything that you don't have to buy leaves more money for, perhaps, upgrading to a better cpu, graphics card, or more memory.

Soopafresh gave good advice; get a big hard drive; 500gb or larger.
For best performance, you should consider utilizing two hard drives; one for your operating system/documents/programs and the second larger drive for your video editing.

    -Finally-
Consider what yoda313 suggested. If you have the expertise to build your own, you can probably get more for your money.

I'd suggest bumping up to VISTA PREMIUM rather than basic. You get MEDIA CENTER bundled with PREMIUM. It is a rather slick interface for HTPC use. Also if you have a xbox 360 you already have a media center extender that can connect to media center - though it should be by lan not wireless. Video will suffer over wireless. FYI the 360 only has G wifi so until N is available LAN is your best bet for video.

    Hello,

I start you a little too mean.
The best option is to build a PC to your liking.
But engaging in part, can I use?
    What closet?
    What motherboard?
    CPU?
    Memory?

I would like to have a silent PC because some friends of mine have a real rammelkar and I want to avoid.
I think someone can provide a feasible cofiguratie?

    Thanks.
    Peter.

What computer do you currently own?
    The brand and model number.

Is there any chance you can simply upgrade your current computer ?
ie; New motherboard and/or CPU ? Better GPU ? Larger HDD ?

    As far as asking for specific recommendations regarding individual components;
The choices and interrelated considerations are simply far too numerous.
If you cannot adequately upgrade what you already own and are uncomfortable with the prospect of building your own, buy a Dell, HP, or some other brand which has the specs you are looking for. With that option you will, at least, have a full system warranty.

    Here's a link for a Dell Inspiron 530 Quad-Core Desktop $534 Shipped.
There's options for separate pci-express video cards as well as other options. This is a great deal if you're looking to use a Quad core cpu.
