I have an mp4 file I have downloaded ( have included gspot info below) which I want to burn to a hard copy for play in a ps3 (and if it works out possibly xbox 360, but not necessary). My question is, do the specs conform to the ps3 as is, or do they require any change. Mostly though, is there enough information in the file (640x264, 812kbps) to get any benefit from upscaling, or any other tweaks to get max quality. Any particular reccommended format for optimal quality and performance on a ps3. I know this is lot of questions, but any advice is much appreciated.

    post info from mediainfo,

without seeing an actual sample i doubt you'll get filtering tips.

Just keep it as is..You're not going to benefit from converting an already converted 812 kbps video and converting it again using a higher bitrate, other than a larger file size...In other words it's already been re-encoded and compressed,so the original quality is gone and you can't get it back... You may be able to clean it some, maybe!..The PS3 or Xbox should play it just fine...

It is pretty decent quality considering it is 2hr32m and only 1 gig. Really, it could just use some sharpening. Does the file as is look ok for play on a ps3?

Yeah after re-reading your post ,I guess all along all you were seeking is sharpening a tad...As 45tripp stated filtering tips..
I've played .mp4 799 MB video from a CD disc with 661 Kbps 720x304, 96.0 Kbps 48KHz 2-channel audio, that frankly plays just fine on my xbox, I mean it looks good to me...

  7. Sharpening is going to accentuate the macroblocking and DCT ringing. If the PS3 can't play DIV3 and you have to convert it turn on the Xvid/Divx decoder's deblocking and deringing filters.

    It's AVC actually,
    but yes the readability sucks.

gspot says sweet f all about such files,
which is why i said try mediainfo,
it may or may not contain enough info to tell you what you need to know.

    personally i don't know ps3 hiccups,
    but someone will

    or,
    just test it.

  9. You have to post information from mediainfo as Tripp asked, or avinaptic

Is this h264/aac in .mp4? Why does it say DIV3?

You want to look at things like the AVC Level, #max B-frames, B-pyramids all which can break PS3 compliance. A low VBV buffer size can also induce stuttering.

If you only have the AVC Level to change, you can do it without re-encoding but using TsMuxeR or h264info

Any re-encoding using a lossy codec will result in worse quality. Filtering will only help in specific circumstances. But if you started did it from the original source that would be another story...

Ha! I didn't look closely enough. I just saw the DIV3 next to codec type as I glimpsed at the list.
