I have an AverMedia USB Gold Capture device I just picked up. It came with Cyberlink PowerDirector Software. My issue is when I try to record my old VHS tapes in PowerDirector I get a copyright protection error message and that it cannot record. Is this an issue with the software or the hardware?
I also have a Dazzle 90 and Pinnacle Studio 10 and I recieved no issues with that, only no audio when I finally played the DVD in my player. I cannot run the Dazzle on Vista x64 though. No drivers for the Dazzle. I just need to know if it is the software or the hardware that sees the copyright protection. Thanks in advance and I hope I am not asking a stupid question...

It could be either one, but onfortunately, we are not allowed to discuss methods for defeating Macrovision copy protection, which is contained in Line 21 of the video data.
We are allowed to discuss other devices which may help clean up old video tapes, such as a Sima Copy Master. This can help stabilize flaky video, as can a more expensive TBC. One drawback to using a Sima Copy Master or similar device, is that it completely removes any Closed Captions, which are contained in Line 21 of the video data.
