I've been using VirtualDub for months now to capture and edit PIC MJPEG into 2-pass DivX MPEG4. I edit commercials and convert on the same pass; it works great and I love the results.
This weekend I tried to do the cuts seperately with VDub using direct stream copy so I can plug a cleaned up AVI file into TMPGEnc and also make an SVCD. Video works good, but the audio is only there for about 1:45 seconds, then disappears until @ 25 minutes in, where it resumes from the 1:45 point, and stays out of sync for the rest of the file.
Two different files, with different edits play as follows:
1st file- audio lost at 3257 frames @ 1:48 in: returns at 46288 frames @25:42 in
2nd file- audio lost at @ 3095 frames @ 1:43 in: returns at 46023 frames @25:35 in
There has to be a hint there somewhere.
I'm sure the problem comes up during the direct stream write. VDub will play the cut file back fine, but WMP and other AVI players either loose audio at the same point, or will play through at regular speed but if you FF or jump past that point, they report an invalid codec error.
I've looked around, and tried suggestions to direct stream the video but full process/ no compress the audio with the same results. I originally thought that the error would occur at the first edit cut, but it happens before. I've also tried to de/re-mux the mpg file in TMPGEnc with no changes.
Any ideas? yesfan looks like he had the same problem on Feb 11, but got no replies. This evening I'll try to strip the audio as a WAV files and let TMPGEnc work with that. I'll post if that solves the problem.

My problem happened when I used direct stream copy for both audio and
video. The new saved AVI plays fine with audio in VDub, but not mplayer
or PowerDVD. I'm not certain about the time when the audio returned
but I'm sure it went at about 2min.

Must be a Vdub problem with large AVIs and direct stream audio.
(You can slider through all the video in TMPEG's source range option -
so it's no video problem)
Saving as OLD FORMAT AVI fixed it, but is there any disadvantage to the
old format? -
I am also having a problem with VDUB, I am able to successfully cut the 1st half, but it never collects the audio for the second half. I have been using this program for quite some time with no problems. This has happened for the last three movies.

Since it's getting more activity, I've moved my responses to another (same problem) thread.

from kingrdr's response, I'm thinking this may occur when there has been
a cut section and then you try to append AVIs.
Kingrdr - try saving as OLD FORMAT AVI. Worked for me.
I had a 3 min AVI and appended a 47min AVI to it - both had been
trimmed. The first one had been trimmed at the end, while the second
had been trimmed at the beginning.
The audio dropped (from non-VDub apps) when I appended and saved
as AVI (direct stream A + V).
But I'm pretty sure the audio didn't drop at the join, but about a minute
before or after - I'll have to check.
I saw something in the VDub KnowledgeBase about audio errors if you
don't trim just before a key frame, but last night I looked at my
original AVI and it only has key frames (K) next to the time indicator.
(Does AVI have non-K frames anyway? Or is that just MPEGs?)
Anyway - last night I didn't bother trimming and tried CCE to encode -
finally got it working.
Looks pretty good and fast (1.5 x real time for SVCD in CBR).
Only prob is when I went to burn with Nero, I played it on my DVD and
it was jerky - like the field order was wrong! Any ideas?
