Build it and I will buy it. I love cutting edge electronics even though I have been burned by it before.

  8. i just got my burner in february and im still learning and developing my taste to this technology, but i think it'll be a while before people even start considering to purchase blue-ray burners. My opinion is that DVD burning is still in its maturing stages and i think it will at least 5 to 6 years before i even consdier buying a Blue Ray burner at an affordable price, if i need it that is.

Let's see.......7 GB for the movie....17 GB of Extras....including 97 seconds of new footage!!!

Oh yeah.........20 minutes of mandatory Disney commercials, I can't wait :

Of course with BlueRay, don't need that 120 GB drive for storage anymore......

Its gonna be quite some time before its a viable format for movies. First it has to come down in price, then you have to have a DVD player that can play them. Also the media will need to drop into the affordable range.

All in all its really neet tech, but its gonna be a while before its a serious contender.

I want to wait and see what HD-DVD is like. Maybe that will have more support on the side of companies and consumers because of the familiar name.

  14. Would someone like to point out a url or a post where I can find out more about this technology and what it is... Obviously it involves reading a DVD with a blue light but besides that....

I'm expecting the next units to be equal in speed to 8x dvd burners about 50-60 minutes per blue ray disc.

  23. I know that "Blue Ray" is being aimed at HDTV, but apart from the Americans no-one else gives a damn about high definition. Where I see Blue Ray winning is in being able to have 5 or more hours of full DVD quality material on one recordable disc. At present you can only get an hours worth. This will then be a direct rival for VHS, but the price will have to be very low. Blue Ray will need to be a mass market product from the start - probably with a lot of subsidies - and not have the slow and costly birth of standard DVDR. I also don't see Blue Ray as a "pre-recorded" format as existing 9Gb discs serve that market fine. It's in home recording that it will be a winner ... Hard Discs for timeshifting and Blue Ray Discs for archiving.

  24. I will buy a DVD burner when Blue Rays are expensive but easily avaliable, that way they wont cost me much and the media will be cheaper than 2/3 CDRs (how many i use for SVCDs eg about £0.40) I think it will take quite a bit to strug off the DVD craze simply because there are so many players out there which would have to be replaced if you wanted to play blue ray movies! besides, even though the difference in quality on paper is huge i doubt the human eye would notice much of a difference, unless its on a very large TV!

I am still happy with my Plextor 24x burner, which burns CDrs in 4 mins, never underruns and cost me £110 over 18 months ago! When i can get a DVD burner which burns in less than 14 mins, with media at about £0.40 then i will buy one, unless this blue ray lark REALLY kicks off!
1)Why Not Overclock a little?! speed 4 free!!!!
    2) If your question has anything to do with copying PS2/PC/XBox games, find a more appropriate website

This is directly due to the fact that Australia is "down under".

You see, the same physics that cause your drain water to swirl the wrong way works against your econemy. The burners must be designed to spin backwards specifically for countries below the equator. This adds to production costs.

Your best bet to get them to lower the cost of DVD burners is to reverse the polarity of the South magnetic pole!

BTW, we Americans need HD so we can better enjoy great shows like "American Idol", Joe Millionare, Oprah, and other thought provoking and moral building programs.

  27. I remember 1 and 1/2 years before at this board people said who cares to buy DVD player with DTS intergrated for the market only has about 9 films with DTS. And the price for DVD films that time is about US$25.oo each.Hehehe, now how much and how many titles with DTS and heaps more 5.1 titles. Very soon Blue Ray films will be the new trend. Dicksmith Sydney sold "Dances with Wolves" only Australian $7.oo (USD4.oo!!!).
Only a year ago DVDR is a dream with many, now it's not. Blue Ray Blue Ray. I hate you, I just bought my Sony DVDR a couples of months ago.

Eh? No, dont say minidisc dying too, i'll have to kick your ass!
(just as i've got a decent amount of LPMDs build up and need to get a fresh MD walkman that doesnt have a warped record head... :/ )

    grr

I can't say i can see it taking off too quickly. It'd be like S-VHS in a way... how many people now have SVHS players, how many films were ever released on it? ..exactly.. DVD is now too established, there'll be resentment at yet another incompatible standard being ushered in (even if it's backwards compatible), and you'll end up with video stores half full of bluray and half full of regular dvd, and oh, panic!
Plus the main benefit, HD, isn't as well spread as you think 9_9
And whos gonna pay for all that remastering, rerelease, repromotion, rescheduling etc of the vast number of films on DVD that may merit a BluRay version (and have already gone up thru VHS, VCD, Laserdisc, widescreen VHS, DVD...)??? Which studio will take the leap of abandoning redlaser DVD in favour of blue, when many havent fully ditched tape yet?

Gonna sit on the fence with this one for a while. Because heck, CDs are still doing me fine.. when i have a dire, dire need to fit 27gb on one single piece of media that can't better be handled by a (cheap cheap cheap now) 30gb hotswap hard disc, a DLT tape, or even a box holding 6 regular DVDRs, i'll call u.

Look at HDCD. Look at SACD. Point and laugh. (and i guess minidisc too; tapes are just too popular still and it doesnt offer that much benefit to the "common man" in the end, especially not when something as radically different as MP3 solid state players have come along)

PS the guy in the middle is saying something about buying the white album again..
-= She sez there's ants in the carpet, dirty little monsters! =-
Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more!
