If you have 2 sticks of 1GB and 2 sticks of 2GB, which banks should you put the 1GB sticks in? Is it better to put the 1GB in DIMM1 and DIMM2 slots or should it it be in DIMM3 and DIMM4 slot?

Unless you have a 64bit OS, it won't make any difference as a 32bit OS can only address about 3.75 GB anyway. If they are all the same speed and specifications, I would put the 2GB sticks in DIMM 1 and 2. It may also depend on your motherboard and how it handles RAM. I would check your MB manual to see if there are any restrictions.

Got the info from Dell,
I'm running WinXP64.
Thanks for responding.
I've just get a new E8500 Video Encoding system, so I decided to shove the old Q6600 into a Dell Optiplex 745. I didn't expected it to work, but the darn thing boot without any trouble. I knew the Q6600 work in the 755, but didn't know it would work in the 745. And since I also upgraded the RAM on my new system, I've got an extra 2GB of memory so I decided to put them in my work system. Dell email tech support are slow when your system is out of warranty. -
If the motherboard supports dual channeling then you will want to place the ram in the appropriate slots. Each motherboard is a little bit different, if you still have the owner's manual you can check it out in there. If not you can go to Dell's website and input your service tag to pull up your machine and look at the specs. I would not be surprised if the motherboard can only support a max of 4GB.
