  1. Hope someone will be there to help me... I didn't find a topic with this recorder.

I have had this recorder for almost a year now and while I love the HDD recorder when it is TV season, this summer, I am starting to get really angry at the recorder because I am trying to save to DVD (DVD + R bought at Staples and from Staples) and they don't work. I am able to format the disc when I put it in, I am able to fast record each episode of the TV show I want to keep and I am able to finalize the disc but when I try to watch the episodes, some work and some freeze. I record in LP and fast record onto the DVD. I really don't know what to do now. Yesterday I copied onto DVD+R the last 5 episodes of two TV shows, both disc don't work. My friend who has an old version of the LG recorder told me that the disc I made for her didn't work and the images kept freezing so she is not able to watch the episodes also. I decided to check on my own recorder I have a LG player upstairs and the LRH-890 recorder is downstairs. Both cannot read the disc without freezing... It kinda make the recorder useless because I bought it to be able to keep some TV shows without having to buy the DVD but now I might have to buy the DVD for those TV shows because the discs are useless now and thinking that everything went alright I deleted the episodes from the HDD.

Can anyone tell me what is the problem? I think it could be the brand of my discs but I am not sure.

Hard to say exactly what the issue is, try recording onto different brands as that can be one cause.

As for the DVDs you have already made, try opening them on your computer, that would allow you to save the content off the discs untill you find a solution.

I record to DVDRW and save to my pc for editing out comercials and such, then burn from there for final copies.

Was there no other signs of trouble when burning the DVDs?

I had a similar problem with an HDD/DVD recorder in the past, but there was other signs that the media was bad. Ie. the recorder rejected one in three of my DVD-R disks entirely (saying "Disk is dirty"), and for some of the burns that otherwise appeared to succeed I got symptoms similar to yours. Problem was fixed by buying better quality DVD-Rs, after which I have had a 100% success rate from the same recorder.

  4. It does sound like a media problem. I had the same problem a few years ago when I bought some no-name brand disks. 50 disks for $2.50. They would skip and freeze particularly past the half way point. I checked the media using a freeware program called Dvdinfopro. It showed that the freezing was due to the drive slowing down presumably because it could not track properly. It also showed that there were no data errors so I copied the disk to the computer, then burned to a Taiyo Yuden disk. That disk played perfectly. Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim are two quality brands. TY is not available in stores under its own name, only online, but Verbatim is available in stores.

There is another possibility. You mentioned formating the disk. Recorders that do that usually allow VR mode or Video mode recording. Some manufacturers call the process "initializing" the disk. VR mode is less compatible than Video mode. There is also a -VR mode. -VR is not very compatible. Pioneer hard drive recorders allow initializing a DVD-R disk for -VR mode or Video mode.
