DDR RAM sticks cost nearly twice as much as DDR2 sticks of the same size. Is there something in the technology or manufacturing process that makes DDR2 so much cheaper?

Supply and demand. DDR2 being a newer technology and the norm, are produced in higher numbers; thus the lower price. Just about all current MB's these days use DDR2.

when something comes close to being obsolete....it becomes costly.....DDR2 memory chips are still new...that's why they're cheaper.....!FYI!
