movie conversion problem

hy

i've just downloaded a movie and i can play it in al my media players but when i try to convert it with convertxtodvd
i get this message '(name of the movie) is unsupported or not a/v file'.
and when i try to add subs with vobsub i get a file of a few kb's wich can not be opend in any media player.
does somebody know what i can do to fix it or to convert it on another way?

this is the exactly error warning:
File "D:\moviedownloads\Johnny.English.DVDRip.XviD-Anth\1.avi" is unsupported or not A/V file
warning DirectX preview is not available (filter not installed).

Buy Johnny English on DVD and it WILL work. Don't download warez releases.
