I'm sorry if there's somewhere else where I should be posting this but I really don't know where. Well I got convertXtoDVD and when I throw a 720p or even 1080p x264 video into the program, sure it converts it to DVD no problem and it works - BUT why is it that when I put a 7 gig 1080P file in it says itl only take 2.1 or so GIGS of DVD space, and the quality is BAD when I play it on my DVD Player, like less than DVD quality, notice blockiness and what not. I want it to take up the full DVD. Are there any other programs that do this better, am I doing something wrong. I had conversion setting on normal, not best/slowest. But when I set it to best/slowest it still says it takes 2.1 Gigs on the disk, why is it not the full 4.37?

    Thanks in Advance,

Most programs of that type go by the playing time of the video file to set the output size. You might try the freeware program FAVC, using HC as an encoder. It may have a few more options over ConvertX.

  3. I thought maximum bitrate DVD spec was 6000kb/s, but according to "what is DVD" in the left top hand corner it is 9800kb/s.

If your file duration isn't long enough, it can't fill the full 4.37GB, otherwise standalone DVD players wouldn't be able to read it.

    Guess you thought wrong eh

Also that's just for video, combined it is not supposed to exceed "10080 kbps"
Total bitrate including video, audio and subs can be max 10.08 Mbps (10080 kbps)
although i have purchased official pressed dvd's that have exceeded that and played fine.

I think it also depends on the bitrate/resolution of the original file also, but i could be wrong, when converting with ConvertXtoDvd.

A lot of times i will actually set the final output size in ConvertXtoDvd to a bit higher than the dvd-5size and it will just fit instead of coming up short, depending on what i am doing.

  5. I consider CX2D to be a "casual" converter, that is , to be used for NON-archival material i.e. stuff you'll probably watch once. It works fast & gives pretty decent results considering, but if you are expecting anything near HD-quality wise from it, you will be sadly disappointed.

Fully agree. This tool comes in really handy for when I have a DivX file or H.264 file of a program/show/etc and I'm going to a someone's house so we can just watch it on their DvD player, where we'll just watch it once and adequate quality is enough. And that's where ConvertXtoDvD is so convenient when you just drag/drop/burn quickly in a no-nonsense fashion headache-free.
I hate VHS. I always did.

Does FAVC convert the audio stream of an x264 to ac3 as well?

It does. I know the older version (1.04 ?) mixed up the channels when converting 6 channel AAC to 5.1 AC3. I don't know if this has been fixed in the subsequent releases. If it hasn't been fixed (and you will know that it hasn't because the dialogue will be coming out of the left or right channel, instead of the centre), add this

    GetChannel(Last,2,1,3,4,5,6)

to the bottom box on the advanced scripting tab.
