What is an easy way to pursue music rights permissions, or to find stuff in the public domain? Thanks!

I just researched this myself . If you just want to play the song it's not expensive. I was finding $20 to $50 for the rights. If you want to use it in a film, however, you could be looking at thousands of dollars to get the rights for a song. It's called a synchronization license. I found this out from Universal Music Publishing when I was trying to get the rights for a rock song for a student film I did recently. As far as public domain music, try Googling "Publc Domain Music". There is also something called "Royalty Free" music. You'll have to pay for it but it's not expensive.
