  1. I feel like this MUST have been asked before, but I could not find an answer in tools or in forum search. All I could find on google was use Dr DIVX which does not work well for me. In DR Divx I choose 700 MB for a movie and the file winds up being like 1.2 gigs. I know there will be some quality loss, but that's fine.
Is there a program that I can load an AVI, choose target file size, and it will shrink it?

    Thanks a bunch,
    Brian

Those settings are in the encoder, not the program that's using it. I use VirtualDub most times for short encodes. In 'Compression' you select the codec, Divx or Xvid, then, 'Configure'. You can use a bitrate calculator to set the output size.

But if this is a full length video, it would be a lot easier to use a program like AutoGK where you can set the output size directly. Unless you are using one pass VBR encoding, the size should be easily set. It may be off a little, but not that much.

The basics are simple, the length of the video and the size you need it to be determines the bitrate. And the lower the bitrate, the lower the quality. There are other factors, but those are the most important.

  3. First let me say thank you. The people on this site are always so friendly and quick with accurate responses from knowledgable people. The similar sites don't compare especially when it comes to the community here.
After posting this thread, I was recommended to a program called PocketDivxEncoder http://www.pocketdivxencoder.net/ I am amazed at this program so far. When you open it it shows you all pictures of different pocket pc's, you choose where you are going to use the file, and it uses the appropriate encoding so it will play properly on it. I chose the PC since I am only shrinking an avi to another smaller avi file. You can extract parts of movies easily, adjust audio synch, shrink avi files by choosing a lower audio or video bitrate, change dimensions of video. Simple program but nice interface, freeware, spyware free. I went from a 1 gigabyte avi file to a 700 mb avi file, took 30 minutes. Results are great, no sync issues.

It's good you found a program that works for you. If you like it, consider a donation to the author, freeware authors are hard to come by and deserve our support.

No matter what program you use, the codec's the 'thing'. Learning about the settings and how to use it will help you with other encodes in the future.

  5. Thanks again, I'll have to learn more about the particulars of codec settings in the future. For now this simple program worked. I took your advice and donated $5.It's not much but maybe they'll be more encouraged to update it with little donations here and there.

EDIT: I have emailed many freeware/Shareware authors out there to thank them for their contributions and efforts. And I have received very nice replies from most of them. They like the feedback most times and like to know they are appreciated. But thank you for their support and I'm sure they will echo that.
