  1. Hi, I am trying to convert back to widescreen from 4:3 (originally filmed in widescreen)
This is my 1st post, I started using this site when it was called vcdhelp.com, a long time ago!

I use roxio videowave 5 to do most of my editing. I edit in the "best" (dv) avi, then convert to other formats when I'm finished, using other programs. My main end result is to produce videos for posting to the net, for which I have started using Windows Movie Maker (since I got Vista). I never liked wmv's b4, always posted videos as mpg, but my older stuff doesnt work anymore, & now I'm liking wmv. I have read lots but have lost my way.

I have a new camera sony trv 460e which films in "proper" widescreen (as well as 4:3). The software that came with it only allows trimming & joining of videos, nothing else. Windows Movie Maker allows me to put text in, but wont let me put the text where I want it. I want my websites address accross the bottom of the screen. I can already do this in non-widescreen using Roxio videowave 5. I also bought Videowave 8 but it doesnt work on Vista, version 5 does, but wont do widescreen. Going back to XP is not an option seeing as Vista is the only legal OS I have ever had (been building pc's since windows 3.1)

I have tried a various tools but to no satisfaction.

I wish to work in widescreen, my camera will film in it & the software that came with the camera will capture in widescreen (as well as 4:3). The resulting avi will play in whatever it was filmed & captured in, & so converting it to other formats (eg wmv) will do the same dependant on the prgoram.

If I edit a widescreen vid with Videowave 5 it will publish a "squashed" 4:3 vid. I do understand that the difference between 4:3 & 16:9 is how it is displayed, but cannot fathom how to achieve my goal. I thought I could stretch the "squashed" vid back to widescreen but I only ever get black bars instead of stretching the vid back to widescreen.

I also have a proper dvd that I have full permission to use as I see fit, I never got the original avi which has since been deleted. This was also done in widescreen. I have converted it to an mpeg file using VOB2MPG which produces as "squashed" 4:3 vid.

So I guesss my question is how do i take a vid that was filmed in widescreen, edited producing a squashed 4:3 vid, then change it back to an unsquashed widescreen vid without the black bars?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

The squashed 4:3 is in fact your widescreen video. All that is missing is the flag to tell the payer that it is 16:9, not 4:3. Unfortunately, VOB2MPG replaces he 16:9 flag with 4:3.

Thankfully this is all very easy to fix.

Restream will let you change the AR flag in an elementary video stream, and DVD patcher will let you change it in VOB files (and maybe mpgs - don't have it in front om me to test)

  3. thank you very much. I have just tried that (twice) & it works, thats what I thought but couldnt relate it to a program that would do it. For what its worth the Program you said gave me the impression that it would only do it to mpg2, so I tried it (re-encode the avi to mpg2, but the program complaind about de-interlacing.)
It had an option to do all files so I tried with my original avi, & it worked a treat.
This may sound like me waffling but it may help others which is why I went on so much.

Thank you.... you are a star!

& to think I was prepared to go back to 4:3

p.s. I have been on the net for 15 years & probably posted questions about 6 times, this is the first ever reply I have had!!! (not on this forum this was my 1st post here)

    cheers dude.

if links are wrong then I apologise & will found out, if not try www.freaksofnature.co.uk (its a motorbike websiste) & the vids can be found under "Videos"
