I haven't tried DVD Santa (And never plan to. ) and haven't used VCD gear, but the others work fine in Vista. The programs that don't work with Vista are mostly older ones or some that are not written properly, IMO.

One compatibility list for Vista: http://www.iexbeta.com/wiki/index.php/Windows_Vista_Software_Compatibility_List

Instead of DVD Santa? ConvertXToDVD for Xvid or similar formats to DVD. Also does PAL<>NTSC conversion fairly well.

DVD backups: DVDFab HD Decrypter>DVD Shrink>ImgBurn is popular.

DVD to Xvid/Divx: AutoGK is also popular.

DVDFab HD Decrypter is updated continually and DVD Shrink still works very well with it doing the decryption, even on the latest DVDs.

I use TMPGEnc encoder all the time. It's a bit slow compared to Mainconcept or CCE, but also a bit easier to use, IMO. It's unfortunate that they apparently haven't improved the encoding speed in the latest versions either.

If you have vista 64 then you will have to turn off d.e.p. to use dvd shrink or it will not work. Not sure about vista 32.

I was assuming V32. Shrink works fine with it. Don't know about V64.
