Can I make an SVCD and put it on a DVD-R disk and will it work on my standalone DVD player?

You can't really burn a "SVCD" onto a DVD-R disc because SVCDs are a CD-based media (DVDs ARE NOT CD-based media).
However, you could author the MPEG-2 video files onto the DVD-R media as a DVD. Assuming that it was authored correctly, it should play (DVD-R should play in most stand-alone DVD players).
