If I purchase a low end DVD player just to watch movies will it be able to play the newer HD and Blu Ray discs?

Obviously, I won't see the HD, but will the player play the disc is what I'm wondering?

I don't necessarily want to buy a DVD player that will beome obsolete quickly, if in fact the newer HD and BluRay become the only way movies are made.

  2. No. A standard DVD player won't play HD-DVD or Blu-Ray discs.

How soon do you think the regular DVD movies will be phased out?

Are most movies available in regular DVD now or are most moving toward the HD and Blu Ray?

Regular or SD DVD will be phased out as soon as it becomes unprofitable for the studios and distributors. It took 7 years for VHS to fall...and SD DVD technology was adopted very quickly by the general public.

Most movies, but not all, are now available in regular or SD DVD. HD-DVD and BluRay are emerging technologies and have met with extremely low adoption rates due to competing formats and compatability issues with legecy TV technologies.

The chances of your new low end player outlasting SD DVD is unlikely.

If you ask the BD alliance it would be now but in reality it will never happen,SD players are too entrenched and the prices(player and media) are much lower.Look at SACD:it was clearly a better format than CD but it never gained mass acceptance.

Many new releases are available in HD formats. Total availability under 300 titles. But there are more each month.

The vast bulk of movies available on DVD are not available in either of the HD formats. Many of the movies available in SD format will never be available in HD - no reason to be, no justification for higher manufacturing cost and higher price.

If you actually watch DVDs there is an excellent chance that when your new player dies (within 3 years) there will still be DVDs to buy.

just ask youself and friends....who owns HD DVD. Of my family, friends, and work colleagues of mine (and the people they know) there is only 2 (including me).

Regular DVDs still rules by a longshot......will for a while too.
