I just installed an ethernet card into an older emachine running win98, that never had an ethernet connection. I installed the card, updated drivers, but still can't connect to the internet, any ideas on what I may have done wrong?

Is TCP-IP for the card properly configured (DHCP or fixed IP/netmask/gateway)?

Being used with a cable modem
Wired from a linksys WRT54g Router

How I would I configure the TCP-IP for the card? I have it set to automatically get IP, if that is what you are talking about?

Start from the beginning describe what you have connected.

You are using Win98 so your system will not help you get the configuration right.

    System =>PCI Ethernet? (Brand) =>Cable (Cat-5?) =>Cable Modem? DSL? Router? =>???

grandma+win98 comp+cable modem=hacked and zombied in 10 minutes. unless you also are providing firewall antispyware and antivirus this doesn't bode well.

did you install win98 drivers for the nics? did any of them show up in device manager as installed and working properly?

any other computers already online attached to the router?

Will install AVG, firewall, and threatfire for virus/malware, and spybot.

all appeared in device manager, none working properly. I have this computer I am typing on now, that is running off the same router as that one.

start with the 3com. they have a win98 driver for download on their site. iirc with win98 you were supposed to install the driver and then install the nic. but i think you could also go into device manager right click on it and update driver.

after you succeed in getting a nic then you may need to use something like the internet connection sharing wizard because the modem will only allow one connection.

If you feel confident that you have the drivers installed properly for at least on of the cards, then make sure you have the ethernet cable plugged into that card. (and unless you have some specific need for three ethernet cards, I would remove the others from the machine)

Once the cable is plugged into the functioning ethernet card, you should see a link light (led) activate on the back of the card, and on the router for the appropriate port. If the link light doesn't come on then you either have a bad cable, a bad network card or the card isn't configured properly.

If you do get the link lights then you can check and see if the computer is communicating with the router.

click Start -> Run -> then type winipcfg and hit OK. From the dropdown box, pic the network card that you have plugged in. You should see an IP address listed that starts with 192.168.X.X. If you don't try clicking on "Release IP" then "Renew IP" and see if you get a proper address.

If you still don't get a proper IP address then you probably have a hardware or a driver problem.

If you do have a proper IP address and your internet still isn't working then you probably need to double check your internet connection settings in your browser.

My bad.....I don't have all 3 cards installed at once. I have tried those 3 all seperately.

I believe I had link light active working on the 3 com card, but was still unable to connect.

I will retry install the new driver that I downloaded.

Running winipcfg and doing "Release" and "Renew" as suggested by hmmurdock works for my similar problem for a wireless adapter in Win98. Unfortunately I have to do this periodically because I think Win98 must remember IP adress from old wireless adapter. The only solution to avoid having to repeat the "Release" and "Renew" procedure for Win98 is a fresh install of Win98. Just another Win98 flaw most likely which is unfortunate.
