What will play HD DVD, and my old region 1 and region 2 DVDs?
Looks like the Phillips DVP 5982 is an upconverter?

Philips doesn't make HD-DVD players. Toshiba and RCA are the only major manufacturers in the business right now. WalMart sells the Venturer HD-DVD player, which is rumored to be little more than a rebranded Toshiba HD-AD3 player. I can't prove this, but that's what some have said.

I am not aware of any HD-DVD players that can be made to play multi-region DVDs. As far as I know, they will only play DVDs for the region that the player is sold in. HD-DVD itself does not use region codes though. Note also that ALL currently sold BluRay and HD-DVD players will ONLY play HD-DVD or BluRay, DVD, and audio CD discs and that is it. No VCD, SVCD or Divx support. I don't think they will play MP3 either, but I'm not sure.
