I specially like what is said in the Product Description:
"With the cutely named Windows Me (for Millennium Edition), Microsoft raises the bar a bit with a new operating system that you'll certainly want to consider for your next new PC."

I was also enticed by this Amazon reviewer:

Why Windows Me?, July 11, 2005

Windows Me has things that XP has but Windows Me works well with a workhorse Gateway G6-200. With that said I'll tell you why Windows Me... You need this Windows OS to use all the software including Microsoft Money 2003 Deluxe and Office 2000.
I find the Active Desktop on the Taskbar to be useful to go to a program quickly once you are in a opend program and or to check a drive. You can have a quick way to get to the Desktop on the Taskbar. I have had things not work right with Windows 95 so, I went with Windows Me and I could now Multi Task better than Tiger. I can put things in to the programs menu easy. I can have a quick list for Control Panel, insted of opening Control Panel I just hilight it and it puts everything in it to the right, to click on it. installing programs is easy and getting the screen saver active is easy as right click and go down to the bottom. I know you may like XP but Windows Me works just as well as XP. for all your needs Windows Me works right everytime when you turn on your computer. I gave this five stars because it is the Best OS, Better than Tiger, Better than XP, Better all around, Go with Windows Me and hang on to Your computer longer and then when it dies get a computer with XP or the next OS by Microsoft.

  2. ME will make your computer an expensive paperweight. I have copies of Windows ME that I cannot give away.

I should dust off my Windows 95 OS disc and see what it would go for. Only slightly used.

I see one seller that offers ME for only $149US is called 'Retro Software'. That's a apt description of ME. I have some Amiga OS discs that I would let go cheap, also.

I always found Win98SE to be much more stable than ME. ME was always crash prone and seemed to have issues with driver support.

If you can get it free, then have at it, otherwise it is a waste of money on an OS that is no longer even supported by MS.

Free Linux is better: I've only installed ME on one machine, period. The only change from 98SE was it "appeared" to be more stable. Instead of getting the BSOD, it froze. Wow.

Funny, but if you're looking at older operating systems, you'll see the price for Windows 2000 Professional is still hovering in the $125 to $150 range at Amazon (I know, I recently sold one for that).

Should I buy this OS for christmas?
    No

Looking at your computer specs you already have XP pro so why would you want to downgrade?

If you are really wanting to try out a new OS then give linux a try. I recommend Ubuntu. You can easily set up your system for a dualboot so you can still use XP.

    au contraire, guys...

I have ME on a Compaq 1700 laptop; it has never given the slightest trouble and has been there since 2000, going thru several updates without a hiccup. All the softwares I loaded worked, including games like Civilization; and it runs my D-link wireless card just fine. The burning software makes nice ISOs at about 12 minutes. For small HDs, it is tiny compared to XP.

However, you can't run commercial security suites on it anymore- tho I use AVG & Kerio, courtesy of guys on this forum. Firefox is limited to version 1.5, I expect IE & OE would also have stopped updating. I expect, but don't know, that ME's bad rep has something to do with mebbe incompatibilities with AMD CPUs, or some particular softwares... or TOS users.

Regarding the Linux, that's where I'm at and it might make a good choice for a dual boot situation where you want to be able to run a particular PC program (like a game or proprietary POS software) in an otherwise Linux system.

I have a handful of floppies that were 3.1; remember inserting disk 13? 8)

ME was fine as a fresh install on a new computer at the time. Older computers (Pentium III), upgrades, and certain hardware configurations didn't seem to play nice with ME. I used ME for about 4 years with no problems. I had to upgrade to Windows XP (and chose Pro) because I needed 1GB RAM, NTFS, NT-based support for certain software, and Remote Desktop.

Wasn't ME the first windows to institute system restore????

That alone gives it a worthy footnote in windows history.....

It's ONLY footnote I might add....
