A friend bought this recorder for 499.chf or 350 US or so.
I have tried to backup two VHS tapes to DVD using the famous one button(one dvd-r, one dvd-rw) and b oth are readable only in the samsung (not in a pc or another dvd reader).

    What am I doing wrong?

  2. Did you finalize the disk? Should be in the manual. That is what makes the disk playable on other machines.

  4. Learn to use Google! I keyed in - "Samsung DVD-VR300" manual - and the below link was the first site listed. It's a pdf file at the bottom of the page.

Actually found it before your post (was just to lazy to add it in).
The description of the disk finalize procedure is on page 90!

there is also a flash version here:
    http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/MM/200212/um_dvd-r300_main_kor_040513.swf

I would like to backup my own VHS tapes, but I get a "copyrighted"error message when I try a VHS->dvd dub.
is it acceptable to post a question like:
"is there a macrovision hack for VHS cassette player of this combo unit"?

A couple of years after the last post here, I have the same problem: I want to back up my own vhs movies unto dvd and the unit is set up so I cannor do that. I thought it is legal to make your own back up copy. Why on earth are these things disabled? How do you do make your own copy without incurring the expense of buying some piece of equipment? I have the us version of this model. Also, I tried the region hacks people posted but does nst work with my model. Does anyone have other tried and true hacks? Thank you. Anne

It has only been declared "legal" to timeshift a broadcast program for later viewing (Betamax case). Making copies is still technically copyright infringement. In fact, per legal experts, the Betamax case did not authorize "library building." Devices to circumvent protection are also illegal...SIMA was recently sued by Macrovision and lost... SIMA was ordered to stop selling its devices.

Thank you, did anyone figure out what 'library building' means? I wonder if it differs from making a back up copy of your own disc or vhs?

Unfortunately people REALLY don't understand...you own the physical media the content is on. You DON'T own the content! So, if someone wants to prevent you from copying the content to another device, they are completely within their right to do so. People seem surprised to learn this...

MV (Macrovision) on a tape is a primarily a distortion introduced to the tape and prevents a decent recording
A TBC (time base corrector) is to clarify and omit any irregularities on a tape including that introduced from an outside source
A TBC is only for an analog source. It is not for a Digital source. A VHS tape is analog
A decent TBC is not the cheapest but in my opinion is far better than any so called black box

Of course all the above could be mute if you have access to a unit the ignores MV

To add to my previous post
Your concern was with VHS tape and the VR-300 would not preform as you thought
As the VR-300 is a combo unit. You will most likely have use another VCR unit in series with it. There are a number of good units, older and new, avaliable including one that ignores VHS MV

Thank you, I tried running it through my old admiral vcr to the samsung vr-300, alas it did not make any difference. I have an old Sony vcr somewhere and I'll try that one, though I doubt any Sony equipment would allow this. Any hints of which vcr brand may work? I suppose I could run it through the Sony vcr to the Admiral vcr AND then to the Samsung..... Maybe a project during X-mas vacation when there is absolutely nothing else to do....I have plenty of cables. Thanks, any other ideas gratefully accepted.Anne
